Whoops, I forgot to say what I think.

Personally, I don't want to intrude on anyone else's work  hmm

And I want to try making an Elite clone anyway, even if no-one else will help me...  smile

Sorry, some things are unclear to me:
1. Wat the pudding is the LIFE studio?
2.What project we're gonna do?
3.Are we hiring new members?

We were discussing what projects we could do. Ideas included a Phone OS and a Sims-like game. I suggested we do a game based on Elite.

After we mentioned doing a Sim-like game, Zeusking19 suggested we join his "Life" project, as he already has a similar game.

I don't know about new members; how many (still-active) members do we currently have? About how many do we want?
We did have quite a lot of people, before... what's a good number to have?

Re: Team Earth

Hey guys, Sorry I haven't been as active. I'm open for joining to LIFE Studios or Making an Elite game. Like I said, as long as we get something out, I'm okay with it.

About making a 3d game: I signed up for an autodesk student account a while back, and downloaded 3ds max 12 quite a while back. In case you didn't notice, Autodesk 3ds Max 12 is a 3d software. I can make just about anything you guys want in 3d. The only problem is I don't know how to make my 3d object in 3ds max look 3d in Scratch (I'm guessing you have to take a picture of the 3d object from every angle. Please say no.). I'd appreciate it if someone told me how. Thanks!

Here's Who Still With TeamEarth as of right now:

Thanks, that list is really helpful!

You have 3ds Max? Cool!  big_smile  I have a copy lying around somewhere, I think — I prefer Blender, though.

As far as I'm aware, yes, you do have to take it from every angle, I'm afraid.  sad  Or at least a range of them.

...I need to think about that a bit.

But it would be really helpful to have a spaceship or two for the Elite game  big_smile

Clone is not preferred. We do not spend hard work for someone to copy us. (As in cloning)

I think you misunderstand -- we were choosing between helping you with your project, or doing a completely unrelated project, which would be a clone of the game called Elite. (Just as your game, the LIFE Project, is like a clone of the Sims.)

We weren't talking about stealing your work!  smile

That is ok.

I think I've figured it out. (I even wrote a really good post where I explained everything, but it got swallowed by the black hole of the internet.)

In summary - you need to render the model at a range of angles, rotating it around two axes of rotation.

To explain: as you know, 3D objects can be rotated along 3 different axes (X, Y and Z). For one of the axes (the one facing the screen), we can simply rotate the whole sprite using "point to" in Scratch.

For the other two, we need to render the 3D model at a range of angles. You might have, say, 10 images per axis, rotating the model 36 degrees each time; making 100 images total.

Then, you'd do something like "switch to costume round(rotX/36)*10 + rotY/36".

The best way to render the images is apparently scripting the renderer. The full 3ds Max is certainly scriptable, but I don't know how it works. I'll try doing this with Python in Blender...

Does that make sense? (:

Yes, this makes much more sense. I'm not sure if I know how to script that in 3 ds max.
However, If I take a picture of every possible angle, how should we order them when we put the pictures in scratch?

Scripting 3ds Max is very difficult!  hmm

So, you have two variables/axes: the X rotation, and the Y rotation. Each has 10 different values, increasing by steps of 36 degrees.

For the order of the costumes: you increase the Y by one step for each new costume. After 10 costumes, you'd get back to the first Y value again, and you'd increase the X rotation by one step.

Then, you can do something like "switch to costume round(rotX/36)*10 + rotY/36".

...does that make sense?  smile

(I hope I've got this right...  tongue )

Yea, this makes sense. I'm working on a cube right now. I'm halfway done!

I do have one more question (and it's a silly one): what should I set the value of the variables RotX and RotY to?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is Complete! I have finished rendering and importing the cube angle files to scratch. I will post it on dropbox to let you look at it. Btw, please answer my questions above if your online.  smile

Re: Team Earth

I had a look at the thing you did — it must've taken ages to get all the pictures! Some of the alignment seemed a bit wrong though, so I had a go at scripting Blender. The Python in Blender is really rather lovely, and I managed to get it to work.

The maths to switch the costumes was a lot more complicated than I thought; sorry about that. I managed to get something to work; have a look at it here (zipped version here).

You should try copying the (horrendous) script I came up with into your project; see if you can get it to work  big_smile

As to rotX and rotY, they just describe the current rotation of the model. For now, I just set it to the mouse position, for experimenting with the costumes — later, it would come from the 3D engine (making it even more complicated  tongue ). For example, the rotX and rotY values might come from the current direction of the spaceship in 3D space...

Anyway, the Blender thing makes me wonder how best to use 3ds Max with this — maybe you could model objects in 3ds Max, and send me the models to import into Blender for rendering? Just a thought.  smile

Anyway, hope this helps...

Ok, I also can't get into our dropboz, which means someone has been tampering with our account. I made a contest to join our team, we will be adding at most 2-3 people. Also if someone could make our team a new dropbox account, that would be amazingly benevolent. We need to find a way to be informed of the username and password without others seeing it. Also, I need everyone's help to spread the message about our contest, just say: (Copy and Paste this if you want)

Hi, are you interested in joining Team Earth? We are a team that is from all around the world, and we recently were front paged for our collab "Kaj's Revenge, the Scratch cat gets kidnapped". We currently have 2-3 spots open, and if you want to join, you enter our contest, which is currently located here:http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/kamesh/2056987. Thanks for your time!

just saying, this is how you would put the password with no one knowing: put the username here, and then on any random project, leave the password, or you can hid it. EX: the username is "chicken" and then leave the word "soup" if that's the password randomly on the projects. or you can do something like "do you like suop? i do!" and have it be the misspelled word. Just an example  smile  hope it helps!

I've been thinking about this — it's slightly awkward trying to share a password without anyone else knowing. I can't figure out a way of doing it that works — anything we post here, everyone else knows.

I'd make a new Team Earth email address, and post it here, but I'm not sure if it's allowed.

If it was allowed, you could each make a Dropbox account and then email our Team Earth email address, and I'd add you each to the Dropbox — saving us from having to share passwords at all.

(It also has the advantage that we can then see who last updated each file on Dropbox, I believe — which would've really helped us last time...)

As I said, though, I'm not sure sharing email addresses here is allowed — could someone find out? Thanks!
