Which would be better?

I'm not sure which would be better. Anyway, here's the idea:

A group of people go off on a journey to some place to get some special thing, which is most likely guarded by a dragon. You know, a classic story (cliche, if you're cynical ).

Now, I'm not sure what they should be trying to get. Maybe some treasure of some sort? I was thinking that maybe they were sent by the king, who had was poisoned or something. So the thing they are trying to get is an antidote. So which do you think is better? Treasure, or antidote? And if treasure, then what reason would they have for trying to get it?

Re: Which would be better?

Maybe a key to something?

A box which nobody knows what's in? Could be gold, could be nothing.

hmmm I think the treasure is to uncreative so I would go with the poison

Re: Which would be better?

Definitely antidote, because that also gives them limited time to get it (before the effect of the poison becomes irreversible), which makes for added drama and all. ^^

Yeah, and the fact that it could happen at any time adds to the suspense.

Re: Which would be better?

And of course, on the way they'll have to pass through many deadly places. You know, the classic sort of thing.  wink  Any ideas of what sort of challenges they could encounter along the way?

They should all have a quarrel at one point over where to go/what to do, which ends up in them separating, each of them going their own way, only to learn their lesson and come back together, eventually. :3

Re: Which would be better?

I think a good idea would be to have a box which nobody knows what's in it but of the two I'd choose the antidote.

Or just slapping on some Moon Logic and adding corny twists.

Re: Which would be better?

Maybe both?  big_smile

Maybe the dragon could be guarding a legendary treasure containing some mystical object (maybe a crown, pendant or ring) that will give great power onto the bearer, and king tells his knight to go fetch it; after getting the object, the king puts the object only to find that object is really cursed and then the knights have to go back into the dragon's layer to find another object to break that curse?  smile

Re: Which would be better?

Well, that depends.  Always remember your world building.  If the king is the kind, just, maybe-the-only-just-king-in-a-while, or the characters are close to him, or there's a reward for it, then go with that one.  And if you want a bit of humor, make someone get another antidote first, just as they're returning.  If not, then do treasure.  As for why, there's where you come in.  It's your story.  Maybe it's the The Hobbit thing.  Maybe it's something else.  It's you writing.

But that would mean going on the deadly journey 4 times! I think two is enough.  tongue

If you want to make it really suspenseful and unexpected, you could make it that they come just too late. Like in movies, just when they get there, the king dies, a heart thumping sound plays and everything is in slow motion. And then, just when the reader thinks its over, they pour it into the kings mouth and the colour slowly fades back into the kings face, and he's alive. Weak, but alive.

So, who were the good guys?

The dwarves and Bilbo. :3 And the humans, too.

Bilbo helped the dwarves recover the treasure, and one human guy (forgot his name) killed Smaug with his Black Arrow.
