You think you have good punctuation? You're on the tip of the iceberg!

True or False... this sentence is properly punctuated...

"Hey!" replied John.

False!

You see, to be properly puntuated, you'd have to use proper curly quotation marks like this!

“Hey!” replied John.

These curly quotation marks are not on the standard US keyboard.

What about the straight quotations marks you ask?

They are from the days of the typewriter. You see, when the typewriter was invented, they substituted the two opening and closing curly quotation marks for straight ones, so that one key could be used for both.

Even then, professional type-setters would have used opening and closing curly brackets.

So now you've got something to tell your teacher when he/she shows you a sentence that is supposed to have proper quotation marks!  big_smile

Well, unless you want to copy and paste all the time, there is no difference on a forum where “ shows as ".

However, there are some fonts (obviously not this one) that will automatically curl the quotations up if it's at the beginning of a word and down if it's at the end of a word. So if I typed that in a specific font, it would be correct.  smile

it's not the font
it's the software you're writing it it, like ms word etc.

But some fonts include the curly ones. Some don't. The font I'm making doesn't.

Okay. It's the font and the program. There.

The unicode is 201C and D.

“This is proper quotes. Happy?” kayybee says.

There are no such fonts. I think you are confused with software? Some programs such as MS Word automatically do this.  smile

Using just the " is still good punctuation. It's just another way of writing it. Just like how people write the letter a like shown here, or kind of like a circle with a line. It's not incorrect, it's an alternate.

There are fonts that do though.
