If they're spam, flamebait, inappropriate, or haven't been used for quite some time.
Now are closed topics so bad? Seriously, if topics didn't get closed, MIT could get in trouble

Yes, veggie was correct. All threads in Misc are closed automatically if they're not posted in for 2 weeks to prevent people from bumping old, irrelevant threads and causing general confusion.
Of course, some threads are manually closed by the mods or admins for various reasons, including (but not limited to) if they have no point of discussion or are likely to cause a flame war.
