Theres a serious monster problem... I thought the spawn city was supposed to be a safe zone! Why are there no torches on the wall?

Not good at all... waiting for the sun to rise, so I'm hiding in someones stone house/furnace room thingy, jumping around 'cause I'm bored, then I notice my food bar is almost empty, and I have no food so I thought, I'll go find that scuicide room thingy and come back with full food bar, so I go out side, and get chased by two creepers and a spider and now I'm hiding in a barn.
Why are there so many monsters in this town?!

I ragequit earlier when I fell into surface lava and lost a full inventory including diamond tools and tons of other stuff it took an age to find.
