An intelligible discussion of the subject of hearts! :)

In school, we are learning about blood and the heart.  I decided that this would be a good, sturdy subject to discuss with, which may actually help me study!  So, please tell me all you know about the heart and I will respond accordingly!  smile

Some facts I know:
~  The heart is a muscle
~  The smell off meat / the heart is the same smell as rusted nails, due to the fact that the oxygen in the air is combining with the iron in your blood!
~ The heart is 2 pumps.  One pumps de-oxygenated blood to the lungs, and the other pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body!
~ The average human heartbeat is 72 beats per minute!
~ Cyanide poisoning does not stop the heart, it prevents the cells in the body from using oxygen!
~ Bloods characteristic colour comes from the chemical, haemoglobin, which is what transports oxygen around in the blood!  smile

Re: An intelligible discussion of the subject of hearts! :)

Let's see...if you have an average heart rate of 60 beats per minute, and you live to be 75 years old, your heart will beat

(75 years/life)(365 days/year)(24 hours/day)(60 minutes/hour)(60 beats/minute)

= 2,365,200,000 times in your life!  That's 2.4 billion.

Unfortunately, the heart is a very untamed creature.  When we are scared, our heart pumps blood a lot faster, when we are angry it does as well, when we are excited, it still pumps faster.  When we are perfectly calm, it slows down considerably.  It is impossible to find an accurate average (Yay, assonance!), because it depends on the lifestyle of the person!  smile   sad   smile

True.   People who smoke have slower heartbeats, as well, and larger people (not fat, but in all dimentions)  have slower heartbeats, and shorter people (like toddlers) have faster heartbeats.  [unrelated]The second was supposedly based off of the heart's beat, but it must have somehow gotten messed up.[/unrelated]

xD I'm pretty sure that my stomach is larger than my fist in size, because I can eat a greater volume of food than that of my fist.

But maybe you're right, and it's just that food gets chewed and thus compressed into a smaller volume, or my fist is small. ^^

http://i52.tinypic.com/5es7t0.png I know what you're thinking! "Neptune! Get rid of those filthy advertisements and give us back the Zarathustra siggy, you horrible person!" Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

I think the stomach is like the size of two fists.

(Curse you 60 second rule!)

Yawn, another boring text signature. I should really make something better.

At school we dissected a heart and I stuck my hand inside it and walked around with a heart on my hand. Everyone screamed. XD

We dissected sheep hearts last year in science, and we had to identify the different parts of it.  smile

Uh oh. Of all the time's for Albertt911 to come on? When we were discussing disecting his heart.

>.>

Edit: I think I've off-topiced this topic for it not to be an 'intelligible discussion'. >.<

Ah, takes me back to my Human Anatomy and Physiology class.  big_smile

Did you know each human heart cell beats to it's own, well, beat? If you take one heart cell beating slowly and connect it to one beating quickly, they'll eventually beat together at the same rate at a beat somewhere in-between.  smile
