One of the issues we've been thinking about that's related to this is the fact that the notes are automatically inherited by the remix - this causes a lot of problems and confusion. If I say "I worked really hard on this for days!", and someone remixes and changes something very small but doesn't change the notes, then they'll still say "I worked very hard on this!" - Which would give me the impression that the remixer was trying to take credit for my work, even if they weren't.
So you know how you can set the default notes, and if they aren't changed, they're not supposed to upload ("this is to prevent lots of projects with default notes text from appearing on the Scratch website"). So also, if the previous notes aren't changed, they won't upload.
This is a good idea, and one we've played with a bit before. But the back end stuff is more complicated than you'd think, but not impossible. Here's a very rough / quick and dirty mockup I made of a way to show the notes for the current project as well as the previous versions of the remix. Thoughts? Recommendations?

I like this idea Normally when I remix, I seperate my notes from the original's using a line (______) and say "Original Notes." But not everyone is that curtious I guess!

Very nice! Then you could focus on writing your own Project Notes, instead of making sure people understand that the notes in your project were not written by you.
However, the notes should only be for
- your notes
- person you remixed from
- original,
right? Adding every single notes from everyone would be a pain, especially in chains!

Thanks for using my idea!
Nice mockup.

Yeah - I totally agree. Seems best to follow the way the "based on..." notices do it. Show the previous remix and the original notes only (and don't show notes from between the previous remix and the original).

Ooh, I like.
The project notes stacks might be a bit of concern, some people like to write very long projects notes, so this on top of stacked notes can make for a very very very long column of text and push the widget that shares other projects made by the project creator down to the bottom.
Regarding the potential notes chain and issue of potentially long notes: I'm thinking that maybe you could make the project descriptions partially collapsible like how it is on YouTube video descriptions so initially there is no giant text column.

That's a nice idea too! We could show more notes from remixes in between that way...
When I imagined something similar to this before, it looked like this:
Project Notes:
[etc. etc. ]
Notes from previous remixes:
>scratcherX's remix
>scratcherY's remix
>scratcherZ's original
And you click the triangle (>) to expand them...
The thing I like about the original mockup design at the top of this thread is that in addition to showing earlier notes, it also clearly states the names of the original creator and the last remixer. My hope is that it will feel more like credit is being given when someone sees their name in "Notes from [their name]'s original".
Another way to solve the size problem is to constrain the height of the notes boxes to a maximum of say a few inches. You can view the rest by clicking (See more), which pushes everything in that right hand column down to show the entire project note field (up to the max height for that field.) So this would handle cases where people have loaded up the notes with tons of stuff.
And of course, or original projects, that aren't remixes, the notes would stay the same as they are now (you can load them up as much as you like, up to a point.)
