In-depth of Windows 8

Windows 8 seems to be what Microsoft has been working towards ever since Vista was a failed XP in sheep's clothing.

When logging in, the computer starts in a "Metro" start menu. The start menu fills up the whole screen and is made up of different tiles.

You can then switch to the Desktop. You do this by clicking on the "Desktop" tile, or hovering your mouse on the left edge of the screen. This is the desktop. The active windows is the Windows Explorer (default file browser) which has changed radically to a "Windows Live" style, similar to the recent editions of Microsoft Office Word.

A lot of thought seems to have gone into this to make it "Touch Friendly".

It seems hard though, to quit full screen apps in full screen "Metro" mode.

Maximising is possible in Desktop mode simply by dragging the window over the top of the screen. This is similar to Linux Ubuntu 11.04.

I will add more as I explore this new "Operating System".

Re: In-depth of Windows 8

I HATE the new os. Windows 7 is good, Vista failed, and XP was perfect for it's time.

Re: In-depth of Windows 8

Windows XP = Windows versions piling up.

Windows Vista = XP [inappropriate word meaning 'changed for the worse' removed by mod]

Windows 7 = Vista+

Windows 8 = Win7 + Windows Phone

There's barely any difference on the desktop.

No, but the Start button triggers the "Metro" menu.  smile
