I'm discovering the joys of virtualisation. Do you use virtualbox? I've currently installed Snow Leopard (I have Lion), Linux Ubuntu, Installing Windows 8 (right now) and going to install Chrome OS

Yeah it's great. If I had a more powerful computer I would always use it but as I don't it makes everything slow.
I'm trying to install windows 8 right now it's stuck on 31% and has fail 3 times before. Wait'n' and hop'n'.

i don't think i'd have any need for it, though it does sound cool, because i already have windows xp running with ubuntu under wubi. windows 8 looks horrid, so i'm probably not gonna waste the space with it.

I'm not too familiar with virtualization, so here's a question for for guys: can I get around driver incompatibilities by running an OS in a VM? I have an old infrared tower that doesn't have 64-bit drivers, so I'm hoping to just run XP in a VM and to it with that. Will that work?

Same... mine stuck at 39%
Then it kept sticking at 2%...
Trying again with 32bit and then I'll try bootcamp

i think Microsoft Virtual PC is better... in Virtual PC you can drag files from outside the virtual os into it with virtual machine additions... vm additions for VirtualBox can't do that... and i can't get shared folders to work

But that's Microsoft... somehow that makes me think it's paid software... and that it will be slow and buggy and look ugly... no offence
I haven't got as far as needing to share files with virtual machines in VB but I'll learn it when I need it

Isnt chrome OS basically the same as google chrome program?
It is, it's made for people who "live on the web".

And Chrome OS.
Windows 8?

Download page...
A developer preview...
Chrome OS? Not released yet to the public, but you can get nightly builds of Chromium OS...
Chromium OS is basically Chromium... on steroids

I have a ton of Linux distros and a few old Windows versions installed on VirtualBox on an old comp I used back when I was "young and n00bish"
Anyway, I would use Virtual PC, but I don't want to buy it separately and I don't have Win7 Pro or higher (which has XP Mode, a specialized version of Virtual PC).

It might work; I never played around with bridging devices through VBox (except for when I tried to get my flash drive into Ubuntu, and that failed), so I wouldn't really know. It might depend on the connection method of the device too; for example, VBox dropped USB 2.0 support in version 4 (I think), and now it can only be obtained by downloading the Extension Pack (or something) for it.

D: That would be unfortunate if it was true, because the device I want to use uses USB 2.0.

You can still get it, you just have to download the Extension Pack. Just look on the Downloads page of the VirtualBox site.

I'll look into it; thanks.
I need to install it for Windows 8 anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean... You should make a virtual disk as you create your new machine...
A little more detail would help
