Would a Mac suit me?

Hello, people of the interwebs, I'm thinking of buying a 15" MacBook Pro once I get the money.
However, just one question:
Would it suit me?
I hear they're good for people who work with graphics, and I work quite a bit with graphics on my Lenovo G560. However, I also hear they're a bit restrictive about customization, and I like customization a lot.
Oh, and I DON'T want anyone to rant about Windows sucking and Mac rocking, or viceversa. Just wanna know if it would suit me.
And no, I don't plan on playing many games like CoD (don't really like it much anyway), just making them. The only games I'd be playing are probably The Sims 3 (Sims 2 doesn't work on Mac), Plants Vs Zombies, Cave Story, and MAYBE Portal 2, if I get to buy it.
If you don't think it woyuld suit me, give me a laptop you think would, as long it's not HP (terrible experiences with them) or one of those cheap brands that one gets for ~$400.
Oh, and it's processor shouldn't be AMD, simply hate them for being infamously slow under pressure (by my book).

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

I think that yeah, a mac would be fine for you.  I personally just prefer Windows, but for you, it seems like a good choice.  I'm not really sure about the whole graphics part, though.  I don't notice a difference.  Just don't get any sort of mouse.  The trackpad/gesture pad works WAY better.

Hopefully you're not like someone I know, though, who switched to a Mac and, when asking how to use it, included Google Maps in his 'how has this changed?' list.  That was pretty hilarious, actually.

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

Honestly, now that everyone (finally) knows that Macs get viruses too, the only reason to get a Mac is if you want a shiny (and overpriced) aluminum computer, or if you are too stupid to use a Windows PC.

(I am a proud Win 7 user, if you can't tell.  tongue )

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

Macs are more for work than Windows.
Windows has many viruses because they download .exes.
Macs have barely any viruses because they don't download .exes.
Macs usually go faster.
Windows have games.
Mac has iMovie.
Windows has Movie Maker. iMovie's way better.

The iTunes of Mac is neater.
Mac's interface is neater.
You can download most important things on a mac.

I'd recommend the mac, and I'm a Win7 user.

With a straight flush.

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

If you're short on money, or just want the mac faster, get a macbook.

By the way, if it's customization you're looking for, I know tons of programs:
Wraparound
nocturne
geektool
icursor

I can list more if you want, but that's all off the top of my head.

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

That's hard to say. It is true that Macs are useful in a professional media/graphics creating environment, but Windows has many of the same programs available with the same capabilities.

You can argue endlessly about the various nitpicks by either side, without ever getting anywhere or proving anything.

In the end, it comes down to preference. If you prefer working with OS X, get a Macbook. If you prefer Windows, get a Windows laptop.

Not trying to cause a flame war, but let me just state that macs look more professional. They are also more expensive.

I also use Win7, think it's great and all, the bad part is the endless updates to cover the endless security holes (seriously, virus-writers. i'm pretty sure your time is better wasted somewhere else.) and many of the error messages, including a specific one that says:
The Briefcase can't be opened because it is open in another computer.
FAIL. It's open in another WINDOW!!!!
window != computer
also, i've used a mac, loved the interface, and it had nothing to do with the color.

i like sony. saw a good one (z-series) that looked pretty fantastic, when I saw the pricetag: ~$1969! yeah, MacBook Pro's no better, but the base stats weren't that good, so yeah.
Anyway, I still have a long way to go to get either, so i have time to think.

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

Mac's can get very pricey when you start to get to the higher ends ones. They tend to mark up their product's parts by a lot.  HP's and and Dell's  can have the same parts for hundreds of dollars cheaper, too. I'd recommend a PC due to gaming and customization being a whole lot better than that of a Mac.

Actually, it has been proven at contests like Pwn2Own that Mac OS X has more security holes than Windows. It is just that Windows is much more widely used, and therefore security holes are more obvious because of the higher amount of viruses. For an OS that gets 90% of the publicity, Windows is pretty secure.

Also, Microsoft's security hole fixing strategy (a bunch of small rapid release patches to fix the problem ASAP) is better than Apple's (All fixes are accumulated into service packs that are months apart). A hole can stay unplugged in OS X for months, while a hole in Windows will be fixed in a matter of days (or weeks for hard to fix holes).

I am not trying to start a flame war, just trying to make sure you know what you are doing if you choose to buy a Mac. It is your choice in the end anyway.  smile

Re: Would a Mac suit me?

If you're not into games, and you are into creative arts and graphics, then a Mac is perfect.

Just one thing, is that for the price of the 15" macbook, you can get a quad core 3.0ghz iMac. If you buy a macbook pro, I'm pretty sure you cannot upgrade RAM. With a iMac you can.

And believe me, when you're into creative things, the extra screen real estate helps... a lot!  smile

And customization? It's actually much easier than customizing PCs simply because all Macs are ultimately similar. This means there are so many customization programs that will all work and all Mac how-tos will work perfectly.

Customization -- get a Mac  smile

The only reason I'd get a PC is if I was a keen gamer.

Either that or I'm a speed freak geek...

wow, I had no idea of that. still, I know what I do like 99% of the time, i don't go into suspicious sites, and if i accidentally do, norton 360 alerts me.
