Any updates on the projected release schedule for the Linux version?

There is a Linux version already available (albeit unofficial)
http://www.notesmine.com/scratch_installer
I've used it to install Scratch on an eeePC running its native customised Xandros.
It runs but can;t really be used on the eeePC because of the display size of the eeePC

Here a quick update on Linux support.
Thanks to those who have helped me with Linux advice. Much appreciated! And many thanks to SimpleScratch for the unofficial version.
Note that you can currently run Scratch on Linux under the WINE Windows Emulator and everything works (so I've been told).
Progress has been slower than hoped, but things are moving. I now have image filters, presentation mode, the serial port (for the Scratch Sensor Board) working. I'm still working on the note/drum blocks.
Thanks for your patience.

Just wondering, but what about having a squeak program that can open IMAGE files that runs on linux? it might make it easier for linux users to run scratch (1.2.1) before the official version is released. Not that I'm a linux expert or anything...

I would like to invite everybody interested to join our discussion at:

We are trying to use the olpc linux version of Scratch with a squeak vm under Ubuntu Hardy.
Maybe we can together find a way sharing pieces of information.

In the future will there be a 3D version of Scratch??
No 3-D version of Scratch is currently being planned. If you are looking for 3-D programming software, check out Alice (www.alice.org) or Panda (http://panda3d.org/) these are both free software you can try out.

Squeak is in the package manager of Ubuntu. I think it works, but I am not QUite sure.

Hello, I just read about Scratch as a computer engineer and father of two the software almost instantly raised my curiosity.
I use (whenener I can) FreeBSD and always try that my first son use it rather than my other laptop with Windows. I, like many others do not like non free software (free as in freedom, not as in free beer). I 've seen that there is work on a Linux version but I haven't seen a word about a BSD version, maybe the Linux will run fine on FreeBSD, I'm downloading it to give it a try.
Another thing I have not seen is the source tarball or the license (I'm still browsing the web), I would like this project to be a truly free project and not only a software given for 0$.
Anyway the software looks great.

Do you mean the source code?

Found the license when unpacking the tar, I don't quite understand why a project like this does not have a GPL or BSD license.
The linux version does not work on my FreeBSD 7.0 "out of the box", I'll try to see if I can make it work but I doubt it.

Quite a while back my six year old discovered he could install the squeak-vm package on an ubuntu system, copy over Scratch.image from Windows (or as I have done, download WinScratch.zip and extract it from there), and run squeakvm on the image. He's getting an error in a squeak window when trying to start it up using ubuntu hardy's squeak-vm package though. I'm going to help him roll back to gutsy's squeak-vm package which works.
