Why are they called Sprites?

Definition of sprite = a fairy.  I'm pretty sure that's not what the Scratch Team intended.

So, why are they called sprites?

Re: Why are they called Sprites?

From what I know, a sprite is an image in a video game.

Like this is a pokemon sprite: http://pldh.net/media/pokemon/gen4/platinum/025.png

Often they are pixel art, but they don't have to be.

Oh, thanks.  I've been wondering about "sprites" and their name for a long time.

Exactly. Early games used static 2D images, called sprites, for objects in the same way that Scratch does.

That still doesn't explain why it's called a sprite. Why'd they call objects sprites?  tongue

I guess you would have to ask the guys who coined the term "sprite" in the first place to figure that out.  tongue  Wikipedia said that Texas Instruments were the guys who coined the term "sprite" for objects (this is where the article writer got his info from).

I think they call it Scratch after the term "Start from Scratch."

I think they call it Scratch after the term "Start from Scratch."

Actually, the name comes from the term 'scratching', a technique often used by hip-hop  DJ's. Since one of the more important parts of Scratch is remixing, (another term borrowed from the music industry) "Scratch" seemed appropriate.
