Netbook + Linux?

Well, its old. My Acer Aspire One AOA_150 (yep, memorized) is hardly ever used, as I have a real laptop and tablet to replace it. I do still use it, but I Windows 7 isn't exactly designed to run super fast on it, and I want something that uses less resources to run. Also, I just want to use something other than Win7. So...

Which version of Linux should I put on it? Which would have the most compatibility? What would run the fastest?

Re: Netbook + Linux?

XUBUNTU is a strain of ubuntu (making is sound like a disease) that has been designed to run as fast as possible on old/underpowered machines.  smile

Yeah, Xububtu is good for slower systems. (It's just Ubuntu with Xfce as the GUI instead of Gnome 2/Unity.)

If you want a really lightweight OS and are relatively familiar with Linux though, Puppy is the way to go.  smile

Re: Netbook + Linux?

Okay, here is my somewhat different opinion. Xubuntu is not, at this point much lighter than Gnome 2. I would advise you to try WattOS, Bodhi Linux or Crunchbang (Xfce edition would be a little more newbie friendly). All of those have very large amounts of software available for them. Look them up, and see what you like best. WattOS uses LXDE, Bodhi has E17 and Crunchbang comes in Openbox or Xfce.

Re: Netbook + Linux?

Use the newest version of Ubuntu (the one with Unity). I have a netbook too, and it's running fast with it.  smile

Re: Netbook + Linux?

I've settled on Fedora. If meew0 can run the newest Ubuntu w/ Unity on his(?) netbook, i'm sure this'll work just fine.

make sure you have enough RAM, I couldn't run Ubuntu before, but I can now after my computer teacher and I upgraded it to 512 instead of 256. It works pretty well.

PROTIP: If you need to use an external card to use wireless internet, use a common, well supported version. I was running "Dam" Small Linux, but had a heck of a time finding a driver that worked. When I used Ubuntu, I didn't even need to find a driver. If you want more programs, you NEED internet. it's too annoying to use a USB drive to jump over programs.

Its running just fine and working really fast (1GB of RAM if I remember). Internet is just fine.

In fact, I got the use of my webcam back. Windows 7 was unsupported.

The computer itself was Windows XP at one point. Then I dual'd XP and Ubuntu Netbook. Then to Windows 7. Now it's Fedora.

I thought it was much older than a release in '08. More like an '06. Guess I was wrong.

Re: Netbook + Linux?

Fedora is pretty nice. I can't stand Yum personally, but that's just me. Enjoy!
