-Descartes
This is his basis for why we do truly exist. However, I think he's wrong...I think a more accurate statement would be: I think therefore, something exists.
What do you think? I know this kind of a deep question, but it's been a while since I've seen a good serious discussion on the forums.

I agree with you. Animals may think too, we don't know. Then, this statement wouldn't be truly accurate because it refers only to humans.

I think thereforth I am is my favorite quote.
It sums up who we are and what.
Because we are only what we think we are, and if we think then we are, are we not?

Well, not necessarily. You may think you are one thing, but are truly something else.

But if I'm not who I think I am, why would you know what I am?
Because if I don't know who I am, who are you to know what I am?

It is impossible for humans to know that they don't exist, because they must be thinking that.

That only works because I don't know you IRL. I read a book with a character who believed himself a traitor and a murderer(and he actually was in the past), but his friends see him differently than he sees himself.

No, he's still thinking. Even if his thought is wrong, it still proves he exists.

No, he's still thinking. Even if his thought is wrong, it still proves he exists.
Yes, but he isn't necessarily who he thinks he is, as he previously stated.

Unless all you think you are is existent. That's what I meant. Sorry for misstating it

But, you know that you must exsist, no matter what you are. Or else you couldn't think it. Unless this is like Matrix, and everything is a trick!

No, even in the Matrix, you still exist... your mind anyway.

Yes. I understand that. I guess your guys argument is deeper than mine. You win. I agree with both Bawm and Descartes, now that I think about it.
This is a really good topic, btw.

Actually, if you were in a Matrix-like situation, you could not truly exist, or at least not as a separate being altogether. Think about if a single person programmed a computer so well that the "bots" inside it (humans) had their own personalities (like us) and thus there is only one human who actually exists, not everyone like Descartes was saying....It's a hard concept to grasp, but basically: Just because one can think, does not mean they exist, it simply means something (a source for the thought) exists. It could be a single source that generates all thoughts that humans have.

Yeah. I read a book where the character later lived just as his mind, trapped inside something. It wasn't his physical being, but more a source of his thoughts, like Bawm said.

"I think, therefore I am" simply proves that since you are thinking, you exist.
It says nothing on what you exist as.

It's easy to judge other people, but not necessarily yourself.
