Minecraft is not hard if you make a custom map without restone.
Plus I think by sandbox he/she means a 3d enviroment is already made for you to use.

I don't think so. Platinum Arts Sandbox is a pretty cool software that lets you make 3D world with ease. It includes maybe 100 textures, a good and user-friendly landscape-molding tool, pre-built materials (water and lava), particles (like rain, snow, etc.), and a whole bunch of other stuff. Really, check it out. I don't know what Platinum Game Maker is, but Platinum Arts Sandbox is really good. Here's the basics of a pretty old version. Try to remember that the new versions have WAY more features, like an RPG mode with spells and weapons and enemies, and a vehichle simulator that's for racing games.
