Featured Scratchers

I think there should be a featured scratchers spot on the front page. There are a bunch of people who like the idea but we would like to get opinions.
Maybe they could gather a group of Scratch members and they could find users, instead of the Scratch Team having to do it by themselves. Then we tell them who we selected

Ideas Made So Far (Some of them there is a lot)

Andres Posted: 1. Ability for people to give some kind of recognition to other people. Like "love it's" but for people. This would be mainly to recognize people how in different ways contribute a lot to the community. I participate sometimes in ubuntuforums.org and they have a mechanism for people to give "thank you's" to other people as a way to recognize them. Something like that could work here too but making it broader, like recognizing for helping others, for creating a new style of projects, etc... what categories should we have?

2.  Featuring new users to get them known for their work and that perhaps have created interesting things and have not been found.

For both of these features I do, However,  worry that people might get too obsessed with getting these badges or recognitions. How can we manage expectations in a healthy way?

Please continue this discussion, maybe we can come up with a mockup of how it would look like? Someone wants to create a Scratch project simulating the system?

Magnie Posted: I was thinking for featured users Need Required:
1. There Nice and helpful
2. Hasn't Had any projects on front page
3. Has Less Than 25 Friends
4. Need More Required Stuff any ideas?
(I Hope I'm Not Making It So I'm Featured...heh heh)
and maybe another place where Special Users Are:

1. Has At Least 50 views on 3 Projects
2. At Least 10 love-its
3. Is Friendly and helpful

Just Some Random Ideas...

Paddle2See Posted: I tend to agree with you here...start simple.  I wouldn't call it a love-it though, I would call it a thank-you.  And I would make it a finite resource so that it has some value.  Maybe each person would be issued 3 thank-you credits every 24 hours (no, they can't be accumulated).  They could give these credits to whomever they pleased, hopefully to helpful people.    Then, every 2 days or so, the top three people would be given a spot on the Front Page.

If you wanted to give an elite team more selection power, you could give them extra thank-you credits to spend as they wanted.  Before you know it, it would be just like the House Points in the Harry Potter books, where no matter how good the other houses do, you just know that Harry's is going to win because some teacher comes along and dumps a whole truck-load of points on him for some heroic deed.  But I digress.

Okay, so how could this system be abused, even if we don't consider the elite team aspects?  Well, people could create multiple accounts and use the credits from those accounts to spam themselves or others.  Also, very popular and charismatic Scratcher's could build a credit "machine" made up of loyal followers that log on each day and give their credits to their leader.

What can be done to minimize the potential for abuse?  You could limit the credits to one allowance per IP address, that would put a stop to most of the multiple account scams.  As for the credit "machine", I suppose you could impose "term limits", where a person can not hold the Front Page spot more than once a month or something.

Yambanshee: I also feel that a account shouldn't receive more then 3 front pages in 5 months (on top of the 1ce per month rule) this would allow for not so popular to make a name for their selves. For example ( not to point fingers or anything) but i think that just about every project made by P2S, arch, bosox have been on the front page (They usually are great though). I even feel that other projects Ive seen on the front page are purely because of popularity, and not the project themselves. Having a strict limit per user would allow for a greater diversity of users to receive well deserved credit for their work!
I feel one problem about this whole system though, and that is that it is suppose to give unpopular scratchers a chance to showcase themselves. How are these few viewed scratchers going to get their thank yous? One solution i might have is to be able to add the button on the forum post that the user makes, their for their not only going to get on the front page for their project, but instead their general help to the community!

Re: Featured Scratchers

I like the idea, but how would the users be chosen? Would it be because they are playing a helpful part in the community or because they are creating a lot of helpful or creative projects? I think this would be good to implement, and I think that a new user should be picked everyday to give everyone a chance at it (that is, if any dedicated Scratch Team member would be willing to do it)

My intake would be that they are chosen based on what you  said by creating helpful projects and playing a helpful part in the community. Also as you said one person a day or maybe one every 2-3 days.

I like this idea a lot. It could show community members rather than just good projects. Maybe they should be picked as often as the featured projects?

I like this idea a lot Lanie. In fact we've been implementing something like what you describe. Here are some thoughts/questions:

Great Ideas!
I think that before you guys add that maybe we could talk about how people might be a ble to abuse it and make it so they cant.

I like the idea of Love-its for other people. Im still trying to figure out categories. The featuring statement is what I was thinking about for how they should get featured.

Well maybe you could give out badges/recognitions at the end of each month. See how the people progress after each month. Also I still have to think more about the healthy way of doing this. (My brain malfunctions early in the morning before i go to school)  smile

I tend to agree with you here...start simple.

I agree 100% I think that the credits to one allowance per IP address is a good idea. That would solve the problem but we would also have to think of those people who do have another sibling that also uses scratch.

Here is what I would like to add on. How about 2 accounts per ip? Because sometimes people share computers
Also I think that the idea of people not being able to have that spot more then once a month is a good idea because then the "top" scratchers won't be the only ones up there

I think we should restrict the voting only to accounts that have been around for a while and have created certain number of projects (none of which should have been censored).

One issues with IP is that they often change. ISPs often give new IPs after rebooting a router/computer.

Re: Featured Scratchers

I really like this suggestion. But I don't really like the idea of "no censored projects allowed" .

A user might share a project without being aware of its "inappropriateness"  smile ...
I never had flagged projects so I don't know, but maybe the creator of the project should see something like "Your project ... has been flagged as inappropriate... Click here to delete it now." That should take away the ban...

Re: Featured Scratchers

I also feel that a account shouldnt receave more then 3 front pages in 5 months (ontop of the 1ce per month rule) this would alow for not so populor to make a name for their selves. For example ( not to oint fingers or anything) but i think that just about every project made by P2S, arch, bosox have been on the front page (They usually are great though). I even feel that other projects ive seen on the front page are purly because of popularity, and not the project themselves. Having a strict limit per user would allow for a greater diversity of users to receave well deserved credit for their work!
I feel one problem about this whole system though, and that is that it is supose to give unpopular scratchers a chanse to showcase themselves. How are these few viewed scratchers going to get their thank yous? One solution i might have is to be able to add the button on the fourm post that the user makes, their for teir not only going to get on the front page for their project, but instead their general help to the comunity!

I feel the same way... I look around to find other people and they have great projects but everyone ignores them..
Also if no one is going to look at them then why upload?.. Thats how a lot of people think.... and that needs to change!

Good point about the IPs.  Given those issues, I rather like your alternate approach of requiring an account have been active for a certain period of time.  The definition of "active" could get interesting.  I would say the account would have to have several projects on it and the projects have to have been uploaded over a spread of several days.  That will at least slow down people making multiple accounts for spamming puposes.

I think that they are good except, I don't like number 2. Of course, I'm not going to start out by being a wise guy and saying how everyone has had a project in new projects or maybe in surprise projects, because that is obvious. I think that it just isn't that important, because only a few people dominate the front page, and I don't like the Idea of being disqualified just for that, because, once, there was a project that was featured but was never on the front page under featured because 3 other projects were featured immediately after that (oija board or something...). Also, the one about "has less than 25 friends", I know lots of people who just go around adding everyone they meet to their friends (I'm not like this, but I've seen lots of people who were like that). I think a major rule should be, IF ONE OF YOUR SCRATCH ACCOUNTS WAS FEATURED, THAN YOUR OTHER SCRATCH ACCOUNTS CANNOT ALSO BE FEATURED. I think people will agree with that. Of course, there is not really any way to enforce that, but I think it would be weird, for example, if Paddle2See and Paddle2SeeFixIt both were featured. and, if someone had an extra account that never got front page and only has there main account as friend etc. and it got featured, would that be possible? just, general guidelines. I don't think anything should be black-and-white here... but the Helpful and Nice part, I think, Is one of the most important. or also smartness, if they aren't very social, as long as they are not mean.

I'm pretty much everything on that list, I've never made front page, except for newest projects. I'm friendly and helpful, I have less than 25 friends, but I don't have at least 50 views on 3 projects. My highest view count is 22 on DF:CS. I think I have at least 10 love-its. My stuff is good, but nobody views it, yet people get their projects on front page and my stuff is better.
