You know, a lot of things go into a scratch project. Time, brainpower, energy... Nothing stinks more than it not getting noticed because it's 4th on the top loved list, so not front paged. What if when you posted a project, you would be entered in a drawing for "15 minutes of fame" or something, where for 15 minutes, your project would be displayed somewhere on the front page. (Of course, you could disable this so that a demo project or PSA doesn't end up there.) This would help people get there projects noticed, without it turning into pure dumb luck, because it would only be up there for 15 mins, long enough to get noticed, but not too long so as to not deserve the attention.
Tell me what you think. Rate this idea 1/10. Good? Bad?

I there was something similar to this (before I joined). But to my understanding, there was a "Random" row on the front page (you can still get to it here) but it was taken down because there was a chance that innapropriate projects could accidentally make their way onto the front page.

You're quite right! Aah, I used to carouse those projects... Those were the days!
The "fifteen minutes of fame" thing is a great idea, but I think I'd rather projects showed up in a "Surprise" row like we used to have. Fifteen minutes just seems too long and selects few projects for a small, albeit significant, amount of fame. I'd rather each project get an equal amount of tiny, tiny fame, than certain projects which displayed no input by the community be picked for fair amounts of fame. What do you think about that?

Now with this everybodywould want his project out for 15 mins. And you can't get 2 000 000 projects on the front page for their 15 mins. I like the idea of everyone getting noticed but it has to be better thought over....

Its not supposed to be everyone gets up there, its supposed to be totally random. Like a lottery. Saying that everyone would want theirs up there is like saying the Most loved and Featured and stuff should be disabled because otherwise evryone wants to be in it. As for the problem with innapropriate projects getting up there, maybe it would have to be up for 2 weeks before it could be entered. Plenty of time for a mod to find it? IDK, I'm not a mod.

The moderation staff largely requires help from the community to catch bad projects; often times if a person is not very well known or if nobody flags the project for whatever reason (for example, people don't flag their friend's projects even if it breaks Community Guidelines), a bad project could be lingering around the site for a while (I've seen some cases where a bad project has been around for about a year before finally getting flagged and removed).
So, there's still the issue of trying to make sure that inappropriate projects don't hit the front page, and there's not enough modpower to go through the millions of unreviewed projects (hence the compromise of making surprise projects accessible but not on the front page, but now I digress ).
So not necessarily a bad idea, I just think it needs to be thought over some more to stamp out the potential problems. ^^

Maybe you would have to request a project to be put in the lottery and a mod oculd look it over, You could only enter once a month or so, to balance it out.

Sadly, that would be potentially 200,000+ potential entries a month to look over (there are around 200,000+ project creators). Granted there's always a chance it would be less, but I bet a lot of people would jump at the chance and so it would still be too much to sort through.

I had the idea for people to nominate their project, and others could nominate the project, and in this way some good projects could make their way to the front page.
You would have an algorithm that uses the variables of time in existence(inversely), number of views(inversely), number of loveits/favorites(this is a hard one to measure, because you want projects with a certain amount to have a higher chance), and number of nominations(similar to loveits/favorites). Each project would be given a score, and the projects with the highest score get displayed.
The score would go down as time passes.
Such a formula would look something like this:
Where v is views, d is days online, f is favorites, l is loveits, g is flags, and n is nominations.
EDIT: This formula can be changed for no nominations:
DOUBLEEDIT: If we were to field test this and see what it comes up with, that would be awesome. I'll get to trying that right away, and see what happens.
