Weird Al asked Kurt Cobain directly, and was given permission. And after Dave Grohl watched the video, he thought that Nirvana had "made it". Not all artists have no sense of humor.
Weird Al ALWAYS asks permission before putting a parody on an album, and Prince is the only artist that repeatedly denied Weird Al permission.

Only around half of the songs he does are parodies. All the other ones have both music and lyrics written by him.

BTW, I love Weird Al. My favorite song by him is either "You Make Me", "Couch Potato", "When I Was Your Age", or "I'll Sue Ya".

He has got turned down before, but Prince is the only one who was asked more than once, at declined every time.
At least to my knowledge. Correct me if I'm wrong.
