I think perhaps it's because, as humans, we can extrapolate and empathize. We know that pain is a bad thing (it hurts!) and we know that when we suffer injury ourselves, it is painful, therefore we can empathize with the shark and "feel it's pain" to some degree and feel that it is wrong to cause that pain. Unless we are sociopathic (unable to empathize with others) - but that is a different topic.

I acknowledge that I am a carnivore - and I don't feel there is anything wrong with that, as long as the killing of my food is done humanely and with the least amount of pain possible. I've had shark (many years ago, before it was recognized that some species are endangered) and it's pretty good - kind of like tuna.

I do find it curious that some folks feel that it is okay to eat one species but not another. I think it's mostly cultural preferences.

meat is murder. you can't say you feel strongly for any animals that are turned into meat unless your veggie or vegan or dont eat that meat yourself.

My dad is a really smart guy, and he's told me not to mess with nature. We kill these sharks needlessly. Shark fin soup isn't a need. It's a really horrible want. By killing these sharks, we are changing the future irreversibly. These sharks won't have the babies they would have had, which means the seals or whatever that would've been eaten by the babies won't be, etc.

Well, what I'm saying is that killing one shark could drastically alter the future. Read Ray Bradbury's A Sound Of Thunder. That's what it's about. Seriously. Read it. Really good short story.

As Charles Darwin said (if I recall it correctly), humans are different from animals in that they can empathize not only with members of their own species, but other living things as well.

I actually had shark meat before. IT SUCKED. It didn't taste like anything at all. Those stupid people are killing them for no reason whatsoever. Sharks belong in the depths of the ocean, not on a dinner plate, don't you think?
