Each time I try to create a sprite for a game, it sucks! So how do they do it? With certain software? Would Paint.NET work?

Either they have really good software or they rip some sprites off of sprite sheets. There's plenty of them out there for popular franchises, e.g. Mario, Pokemon, Sonic, etc.

Years of practice AND natural artistic talent. If you can't draw, you can't sprite.

Creativity I guess.

Example of Da Gamez
And they make it so awesome with practice and some, natural ability. I can't do it at all, though. D:

Just zoom in all teh way and use the smallest brush where it's just a square. Then just make your item and when you are done resize it so that it is bigger until you have the perfect size.

pixel art, long painstaking effort, you can't expect to make picaso graphics in 5 minutes work buddy.

It's 100% practice. You can do great sprite art with any art program - buying programs like Photoshop just to do pixel art won't do you any more good than Paint.
In fact, Paint is probably one of the best programs due to its simplicity.

Assuming we're talking about custom self-made sprites, most of the times good sprites just practice, effort, and time. Software usually has nothing to do with it (unless the user is nitpicky about things like fancy brush effects), any basic image editor will do the job (yes, even the Scratch one
)

I don't
I usually just use the paint editor in Scratch. It's not that hard really

Dangit, I was JUST coming to ask this, lol.
Yeah, I was gonna ask how to do pixel art and if there were any programs or anything out there so i can do stuff like this:
I keep trying to do wolf-like sprites, and the basic shape keeps coming out like an alligator or platypus :-P

Compared to the most basic and natural form of drawing (outlines and fills), pixel art is very stylized, which adds on to the challenge. I suggest that if you are not sure you understand shapes and shading very well, then try drawing naturally and get practice with those things first. Then you can start applying styles. :3
It's always nicer to work at a higher resolution rather than a small one, because low resolution gives you less room for mistake and experiment.
