FAQ: How do I become famous without the need of spam?

Introduction

Hello, most people who don't get many views or don't regularly get noticed ask the same generic question: How do I become famous? My answer requires no need for spam and won't get you banned, blocked or ignored on the website!
_________________________________________________________________________________

Getting Started

To start, you'll need Scratcher status so you can have a signiture (I'll explain that later), next - you'll need to make good projects, after all - how whould you get famous with basic things such as Scratch Cat doing basic motives or doing nothing at all! Try making animations if you aren't that experianced but if you are, games are your way to being famous! Next, people think 'advertising' or 'inviting' people to your projects via. the comments system is clean, it isn't. Its called spam - and no matter how you put it, a link to your project is considered spam and may get you ignored, flagged and banned. Instead, make constructive comments. Here are a few examples off my recent projects:

ricarose* on Collab Camp
Cool idea NeilWest! Hope you'll submit this idea today!

CamperKaetochi on Your Guide To Scratch Volume 1
This taught me a lot! Thanks!

soccerstar1 on Flower Patterns 2
I love it! Its so cool!

Paddle2See* on Pumpkin Fall
The pumpkin dropping works great! But I feel like there should be some sort of target to aim at?

So then, your first step is to make constructive comments on either what you liked about the project or what could be improved.

Now you know about commenting, next up is the forum. You'll need Scratcher status first to acsess this section of the tutorial. First, you'll need to know how to BBCode. For information on BBCodes, check out JSO's tutorial. Now, click Profile at the top of the screen and click Personality, there will be a box which you can type in. Use the BBCodes then to create a type of advertisement in the box and then click Submit. Remember, all signitures must be up to 2 lines large.

Anything Else

I hope you enjoyed reading my tutorial and if you do have any questions, feel free to post them here and I will explain them to you. Oh, and Admins, please move this FAQ as this I couldn't post there so I had to post here. Remember to suggest this to Scratchers who are new to the website and aren't paticularly famous! Oh, and more tutorials about the Scratch website are coming soon by NeilWest!

I object! Posting links to your projects will never get you banned unless you spam uncontrollably and continuously, posting 100 links a day on the same project.

...but nobody does that.

http://i52.tinypic.com/5es7t0.png I know what you're thinking! "Neptune! Get rid of those filthy advertisements and give us back the Zarathustra siggy, you horrible person!" Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

tongue  Yeah, agreed. I think that you just need to find the perfect way to put it. For example, on a project about a side-scrolling engine you might want to post a link to your scroller project to show a possible way of implementing their engine. And throw in a compliment about how better their engine is, just because everyone likes to hear that  tongue

If the Scratch Team didn't want links to projects at all, why did they allow them in the first place?

Re: FAQ: How do I become famous without the need of spam?

A big part of getting tons of views on projects is figuring out what people do/dont like. Took me a couple projects before I figured it out.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of the "New" in "New scratcher"?

Just be active on the forums AND the main website, sooner or later, the Scratch team will manually upgrade you.

I honestly don't know how I got famous, but I'd say, don't troll, make different projects that appeal to everyone, not just one genre every project, and make them good, don't just slap one random stuff and call it a game.

I disagree with the red part. A link by itself to something completely unrelated is spam, but this is misleading (and may lead to lots of things being flagged unnecessarily). If somebody runs a competition, runs an audition or request something, then you need to put a link in a comment. If you want to show someone a related project, inspired by the project you are looking at, you could add a link whilst commenting about the project.

What's the point of links if you shouldn't use them?

Sorry, but I don't think you're very famous. I've never heard of you.

Actually, you can put a link to your project. Examples:

Here is the request you wanted: (link to project)

or

There was a glitch in your project, I demonstrated it fixed here: (link to project)

Also, don't request to have this put in the FAQ forum--the mods will put it there themselves if  they think it suits this topic.

Whether or not link spam is seen as spam kind of really depends on how it being done as well as how often. Quoting ST member Lightnin on the issue:

On Scratch 'spamming' is when Scratchers post lots of links to their projects so that others will see them and increase their views and love its. There's a fine line between "show and tell" and spamming. Think of it this way: If someone comes to a party and says "Hey check out my new project!" that's cool - it's nice to see what others are up to. But if they say "Hey check out my new project!" every 5 seconds to everyone in the room, it gets old pretty fast. That's a kind of spamming, so we politely discourage it.

Simply put, sometimes even commenting about a project while adding a link to your project as well can sometimes be seen as callous (in other words, some would question if the comment is sincere or not because of the link), especially when it's being done a lot. Surely there are cases where it would be practical to put a link in a comment; but for the case where a link is sneaked in just for the sake of getting more views, it's just not necessarily a good idea all the time and it should be used sparingly. ^^

@NeilWest: Why don't you use this guide as a resource?  smile
