Extract Thumbnail from Project file

About GetThumbnail
==================
GetThumbnail is a little java program that can be used to extract the thumbnail
image from a Scratch project. To do all this it uses the jar file that normally
is used to execute the Scratch applet (ScratchApplet.jar).

How to use it ?
===============
In order to use it unzip the entire GetThumbnail.zip in a folder
e.g. c:\GetThumbnail startup a command prompt and change into the directorty containing
the project that you want to use to extract the thumbnail from.

e.g. lets assume the project is called "1 Joke.sb" and is located in the folder
c:\GetThumbnail folder the command would look like :

c:\GetThumbnail\GetThumbnail.cmd "1 Joke.sb"

This will create the image "1 Joke.png" in the sane folder as the originating
"1 Joke.sb". Please make sure that you don't forget the "" surrounding the project filename

Where do I get it ?
=================
Download it at the following location :

Have Fun,

Re: Extract Thumbnail from Project file

Jan

It doesn't seem to work for me. I have Java installed, (the dos java command exists) but it says "not enough parameters".

Is there any way of running this on computers without java installed - is it possible to pack a Java VM with it?

Re: Extract Thumbnail from Project file

I replace the old ZIP file with a new one also containing the JVM I am using.
Please give it a try.

Sorry,

I thought the .cmd file was an example on how to use it, but now I see it is supposed to be "called". Sorry, it works fine but, the quality is a bit low. What is causing this?

Re: Extract Thumbnail from Project file

I should have the same quality as the thumbnails used on the Scratch Website. If you see a huge difference, please send me the project file the generated thumbnail and the picture use on the scratch web site.

Jan,

I am implementing this program in my discScratchr program. So the project thumbnails show up in the menu.

Does it always stores the thumbnails as PNG? I need BMP's for it to work  sad

Re: Extract Thumbnail from Project file

Hi Jan,
When I ran your GetThumbnail, I always got "Error - Project file not found". I have a 1.sb saved in the same directory GetThumbnail is in, and the command I typed in was "java GetThumbnail 1.sb". I'm running it under Linux.

Thanks for your great work and help!

Do you still need it, I can make it work for BMPs as well ?

Re: Extract Thumbnail from Project file

Jan,

I got a workaround using free third-party software, that I can use from within my application.

I can still use it, it would improve my program but it works this way too, don't spend too much time one it  big_smile
