But the original equation is without brackets, so we follow the order of operations. Elementary school math ftw.

The point is to find out what people think, not to find out the answer. So yes, leaving this open serves a purpose.

If there's a right answer, what really needs to be done is teaching those who don't understand how to get that answer, not just letting them give an answer and not caring if its right or wrong.
