Re: Scratch User Rankings...please read, Scratch Team!

I think this is a wonderful idea. There could be a leaderboard for each group, so like a "top bronze members" board and a "top gold members" board etc.. I think it would make scratch a bit more competitive.  big_smile

Yes, but some people see competition as a bad thing. They fear people will get out of control

Yes, there's already a huge competition for the Front Page - and this is a far more in-depth analysis of fame. Another problem with it is that the points don't go away. That was the problem with the highest top viewed ever - and why it was taken out of most viewers' radar.

Besides, Scratch really isn't a competitive site. It shouldn't really matter if you do or don't get on the front page.

People would just do more complaining about not being famous and also someone could just view their own project loads and click love it on it and download it more than once.

I'm only joking, of course.

I totally agree with these points - Scratch isn't meant to be a competitive site. However, you can't love a project more than once, and downloads only count once.

I'm afraid that if this was implemented, people would get over competitive and forget the main point of Scratch, like what happened with post counts. And you know there are going to be people that cheat the system. (For example making multiple accounts.)

Perhaps if you post a post, there is a thank you plugin for Fluxbb, if you click the thank you button on a post, saying that it helped you, that user gets points.  smile

Re: Scratch User Rankings...please read, Scratch Team!

@cpumaster930
It's an interesting idea, from what I can see but I disagree in implementing this.

Although, this can give a chance for new projects to be viewed it still seems a bit biased. The Scratch Team tends to implement ideas that would be equal for all and wouldn't cause problems. That leads to the next reason in which I disagree with this idea. Not only would it cause a bigger competition than it there is already (to get onto the front page), but users of a "lower rank" would feel disadvantaged.

Scratch isn't a competition, but instead it is a way to help up all step up into the world of basic programming. Although, this would simulate real world competition the target age of scratch is so low it'll just most likely intimidate new scratch users, and new basic programmers.

Another problem is also the problem that used to haunt us before the scratch team made it so only one project by someone can only get onto the frontpage once at a time, and that is domination. It's great to have a vararity of choices on the front-page but when someone is dominating the frontpage it can get critical.

And last, is the astetic feel of the front page. I think it would be hard to implement this in a friendly and simple way onto the front page the way it is now.

Nice thought though.  wink

Re: Scratch User Rankings...please read, Scratch Team!

it might be unfair, because some people have like, their whole class on scratch... so they can 1. all view the project, 2. all love-it the project, and 3. download it millions of times.

Re: Scratch User Rankings...please read, Scratch Team!

The main reason this is probably not going to happen, is that the Scratch Team doesn't want there to be too much competition between users and making projects without much effort JUST so they get to the top of the user rankings list.. After all, quality, not quantity, so yeah. Hope that helps  smile

+1 And this would just make users feel bad with a low ranking - even the New Scratcher status does that very well.  hmm

Now that's a great idea!

I agree: There should be some kind of rating system... But I don't really agree with your proposed system. Nice ideas, though!  big_smile

Hey, that's a cool idea! Still, I think users who post a lot (example: me) would therefore get many more points, and the emphasis would be a lot more on the post than the content thereof. Also, a lot of users would probably click that button as a sort of "love-it" button, and those who post humorously or in interesting styles may get more points.

It also sorta turns the forums into a game, which is not was the purpose of the forums was in the first place.

I'll stay and give you my opinion, of course. [/offtopic]
I'll spell it out in quotes:

Yes, but some people see competition as a bad thing. They fear people will get out of control

Don't forget the cheaters. Members creating other accounts to give their projects views/love-its/downloads. That already happens even without this system -_-'

I'm afraid that if this was implemented, people would get over competitive and forget the main point of Scratch, like what happened with post counts. And you know there are going to be people that cheat the system. (For example making multiple accounts.)

I think this idea would have a really negative effect on the community, will make games worse, and make people quit.

bye 1.4, we all loved you. but we all outgrew the site. 2.0 is a welcome change.

Re: Scratch User Rankings...please read, Scratch Team!

I don't like this idea for the following reasons:

1.) Competition. Even though it'd be good because people would be more inspired to make better projects, it's a negative influence. Somebody with more points, for example, could brag about it, making other scratchers feel worse.
2.) Cheating. Multiple accounts, self-downloading, etc.. With this implemented there would probably be thousands of extra accounts.
3.) Famous people would be elite in no-time, yet unfamous people would never pass the first rank. There wouldn't be many people with more than 999 points.
4.) The main idea. The idea of Scratch isn't to compete, it's to learn. With this, people wouldn't take their time to learn, they'd just want to pass ranks.

And anyways, this obviously won't be implemented. I'm sure the ST wouldn't like the idea because of the competition.
