printing text or images onto images

Using php it's possible to print text onto an image http://www.blocks.scratchr.org/API.php?action=text&string=like_this_one.

Is this possible with costumes in Scratch or Panther? Could text be stamped onto an existing costume?

Exactly... but who knows how they coded that -- maybe they just overlay a morph.
