Freedom of Speech (Language Cencoring)

Scratch does a great job of cencoring language on the site. But as well as keeping the site clean, it is also limiting freedom of speech.
What I would like is for the scratch team to un-censor the word "*".
This word is fine to use in the context of a donkey. Censoring the word "*" is like censoring a random word like "potato". There is nothing wrong with a donkey, so I think * should be un-censored!

Alternatively, just use the word donkey on those rare occasions when you need to.

Re: Freedom of Speech (Language Cencoring)

Good point, apg, lol!

I share your discomfort concerning censoring, and I agree with you that it's not mere vocabulary that needs watching, but the context it's used in. After all, you can just as easily insult others using somewhat more fancy expressions which fall outside any word filter. But I do see some benefits in banning those three-/four-letter-words most common in hate-posts, especially on a heavily frequented site such as Scratch.

But aside from this, I'd really be interested in your donkey-project (I could also think of some interesting projects relying on anatomical terms, perhaps even discussing the outcome of the gastrointestinal tract), just kidding ...  wink

Re: Freedom of Speech (Language Cencoring)

apg: I totally agree with you. A filter that simply removes a word without looking at the context is really dumb. However, the technology and time it would take a really smart filter is beyond what we can do. The fact that you are the first one to raise the issue of this particular word makes me think the system works most of the time. There have been hundreds, if not thousands, of insulting messages using that word that have been automatically censored.

In my personal opinion most censorship is not really worth it. However, a good number  of parents and educators do not want to let their kids use Scratch because they have seen some inappropriate content on this site. If we really want Scratch to be used by everyone, we need to attend to the concerns of those parents and educators.  Maybe one day people will learn that banning words is not as effective as talking to their kids about the meaning of those words and why insulting others is not the most productive way of solving problems.

Anyway, if you really really feel that the word "*" is essential for your project. Upload without that word and I could make a change directly into the database to change the word donkey for * :-) Seem like a lot of trouble but it might be worth it.

Re: Freedom of Speech (Language Cencoring)

Yeah you're right but like andresmh said you would need a REALLY hi tech filter which would be very expensive so you may have to start paying for Scratch (shock horror(hmmm)) If you just say things like this then  Scratch can un censor them

Coolsey, this thread is three years old. I don't know how much people are OK with you posting single sentences on ancient threads -- I mean, it's perfectly fine if you feel you have something valuable to add or want to bring back up the issue, but let's spare the hints on bad words, eh?  wink

Okay, when was the last time you used the work "donkey" on Scratch?

http://i52.tinypic.com/5es7t0.png I know what you're thinking! "Neptune! Get rid of those filthy advertisements and give us back the Zarathustra siggy, you horrible person!" Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>
