Heart Rate Monitor in Scratch?

Is there a possible way to implement a heart rate monitor in Scratch using a sensor board, or at least be able to build one in Scratch?

Re: Heart Rate Monitor in Scratch?

You mean something that could monitor your heart beat, like the exercise bikes do?

Yeah. But in Scratch.

Re: Heart Rate Monitor in Scratch?

Well, I'm not really sure what kind of sensors the sensor board has. Maybe you could use a stethoscope to amplify the sounds of your heartbeat and then use the loudness reporter to check for beats? That would be really prone to false readings because of other noises from movement though.  hmm

I don't have one, but I wouldn't imagine so. I mean, it's a sensor board, not something you use in health class. I'm not sure though, but it's highly unlikely.

doesn't this belong in the Sensor Boards forums?

Re: Heart Rate Monitor in Scratch?

I can't think of any way of doing that, besides getting the user to manually check their pulse and enter it.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you planning on making that needs the user's heartrate?

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Re: Heart Rate Monitor in Scratch?

Shine a red light at a photocell and tell the user to put their finger between the two. Don't allow any space between any of them, though - it should make a neat "sandwich". higlight - it's Type in Color Day

I had this app idea that I sent to the Museum of Science and Industry for a contest. I want to try and develop a simple version of it on Scratch for another contest.

Oh, a heart rate app? That's interesting.  smile

It seems like most methods posted here go for sound, but other heart rate apps out there don't necessarily use sound for their heart rate monitor - most apps use some kind of light sensor to determine heart rate (for example, they look at the color of the finger while flashing a light through it to see the rate of pumped blood. scratchisthebest's idea simulates that process). I don't know about Sensor Boards that much, but it it has a light sensor, you could try something like that.  smile

^This isn't such a bad idea.  smile

If you use the idea of sound, you could try your monitor on yourself first to give you an idea on the ideal loudness for a heartbeat (you'll probably have to insist that the app be used in a quiet place, though). Just keep in mind that heartbeats at resting and after exercising might be different because of the differences in blood pressure against the walls. ^^
