Is there any way to make your computer fast and stay that way?

I just got a new laptop, and I want to keep it fast.

Information:

OS: Windows
Version: 7 (pro)
Webcam?: Yes
Web browser: Firefox/IE (newest version)
RAM: 3.00 GB
Other:

Intel Dual core processor (i3), 2 USB ports, I got it from bestbuy,  and I have a (USB) laptop fan running under it.

Uninstall unneeded stuff and make sure the HDD gets defragmented at least every week.  smile

Re: Is there any way to make your computer fast and stay that way?

A plain old Intel dual core? O_O I can't see that being too fast when trying to run Windows 7 in the first place, but then again I don't really know the exact specifications.

Anyway, I'd just recommending removing bloatware that's already on there, refrain from installing too much stuff that's going to run in the background and clog up the registry, defrag regularly (I believe Windows 7 does this automatically) and make sure you install a good antivirus to keep away malware that can wreak havoc on your computer.

Empty your recycle bin, and I'd also periodically delete histories.

Delete System32. It makes your computer faster.

Lol, jk.

One protip is to not use IE. Use FF. Faster internet.

Linux is NOT the worst OS ever. He obviously never had Windows 98.

Linux is actually pretty good. It runs on a Unix kernel, which is beast.

Empty Cache, History, and the recycle bin. Get more RAM.

13? I think you mean a Core i3 dual core, which is much different than an Intel dual-core, which is usually just an old, generic Intel slapped into a budget box. It's not top-of-the-line, but the Core i3 is a good, speedy processor that will serve you well.

Bloatware is software that comes pre-installed on the computer (or in some cases is forced on your by new new devices like cameras or printers), but no one really wants because it's generally useless. Examples include proprietary game centers or photo viewers, multimedia software, or game demos.

Well, you can delete everything on your computer.

Re: Is there any way to make your computer fast and stay that way?

^^ I am going to say mostly what everybody else said: don't install a lot of software that would run in the background, defragment your disk regularly (Windows 7 does that automatically), get good virus protection, delete history regularly, make sure to do clean uninstalls, don't mess with processes too much.

If you're very worried about it, there is system optimization software out there that you can purchase.

Also, you can do system backups so you could restore if anything happens.

Re: Is there any way to make your computer fast and stay that way?

Replace the hard drive with a fast one and install another fast one which will only hold the OS, all other programs and files should not be placed on the HD which holds the OS. Hmm it's a laptop so you might have a few problems doing that.

How much RAM has it got and how fast is the CPU (in GHz)? You can find this out by clicking Start>Right click Computer>Properties.

I might return for a little while.

Yep, it's i3 (it was almost 10:00 when I posted this, so I couldn't see if it was i3 or 13)

Unless it is critical that you reliably run certain .exe files, I highly recommend that you upgrade to Ubuntu or some other free and open source operating system (ie. Debian). If you must run .exe files, then you can partition your hard drive to accommodate a small Windows 7 partition.

Despite your uncle's, misgivings, I, running Ubuntu 11 right now, can recommend it with no misgivings.

Update: My uncle says Linux isn't that bad, though he hates the non-point-and-click way it's set up.

Vista was the worst thing Windows did. Agreed?

I can't see how that would bother anyone reasonably familiar with computers. Besides, lots of distros like Mint and Ubuntu have a GUI for system setup.  hmm

Agreed, although they redeemed themselves 10 times over with Windows 7. Awesome OS.  smile

Re: Is there any way to make your computer fast and stay that way?

if you want to keep it fast, uninstall FF and IE and get chrome. IE isn't really that useful, and FF uses an unreasonable amount of space. chrome is lightning fast and takes up very little space.
