Once sales start dying and a minimum time has passed, I will release the game source code as some kind of open source. I'm not very happy with the draconian nature of (L)GPL, nor do I believe the other licenses have much merit other than to boost the egos of the original authors, so I might just possibly release it all as public domain.

Yes, but long after the game is released. But if you won't pay for it out of cheapness and don't plan on paying for it you don't deserve it.
Notch certainly thinks everyone deserves it.

Not everyone has the money to spend on luxury past-times
Personally, I think it is great that Notch is so open to the idea of putting his software in the public domain. Hopefully, his actions will inspire others to set aside the outdated business model of DRM and take a different stance on these issues.

It is a good move IMO. While i think that people too cheap to buy it and get it this way are kind of lame, I think that after a certain point all companies should at least release their games for free. If they continue to charge, they will eventually be forgotten in favor if bigger and better things. This way is just like putting works of art in a museum: preserving the art for generations to come.

No, I said out of being cheap, not out of not having the money.

Yeah it'll be a long time until he releases it to the public domain. Think of it in the way you can pretty much play any game from before the year 2000 for free
