I like the Scratch interface as it is now, but I have a suggestion to improve (?) it.
I think it would be a cool improvement to replace scratch's top tool bar
("new, open, save save as, share!, undo, o language o, extra's, Want help?") with icons.
I think it would make Scratch easier, and the screen emptier .
I made a mock up (just some image editing) and I personally like the result:
What do you guys think?

Nice! I like the idea of icons...but I would still want tooltips. And I think maybe Share and Extras might need a bit more work. Maybe an up-arrow for Share (upload)? And a hammer for Extras (tools)?

I was thinking the same, I don't like the share and extra's icon neither.
The extra's icon is still ok, but "share" is an important button (thats why it has an "!" at the moment, I think), maybe it should be light blue (the color of the selected tool for copy/cut/paste/select) or just another icon.
On the homepage, the share icon is just a globe:

About the tooltips, sure we need them

An up arrow and a globe might be the best sharing icon:

@JSO - It would seem so!
But why not just make a folder that it runs the icons out of so that way people can have the icons that they want.
That makes it way too complicated, I think. But I'd really like a response from a Scratch team member.
I really feel like the Scratch team is not participating the forums anymore - the only one seems to be andresmh, and he is responsible for the website (?). Suggestions or bug reports for the website are followed up, suggestions or bugs in the Scratch Application are forgotten and buried by new topics. I think also Scratch "developers" (by that, I mean the ones designing and programming the Scratch application) should be more active on the forums. If they'd read the forums once or twice a week, they might be able to share their thoughts about suggestions for the scratch application better then Andres (that is not meant to be mean, it's just that people involved in the development of the Scratch app might be able to respond immediately before waiting for a Scratch team meeting, Btw, Andres: great work, every bug reported is almost immediately fixed, every suggestion is followed up carefully, thank you for that!)

you should have the choses like: Image and text, Image, Text

Saying as we are talking about the Scratch interface, I had some more ideas:
- Get rid of the shadow around the project area. - Yes, it looks good, but it makes it hard when you want to align something to the very edge.
- In the Mac version, make it so the close button actually works.
- Use a system-native file browser
I am always seeing hidden files and ejected drives in Scratch file browser.

I would love to hear the reason why you feel the share icon should be....a sock? Do you share socks with your friends

It does seem that we are kind of on our own here...I'm not sure what's up with that. Maybe they are busy working on some fantastic new features or bug fixes. I'm not sure. Maybe Jens knows what is going on?

The Scratch developers (John and Evelyn, and - to a much lesser degree - myself) are, in fact, very actively reading the forums, and track of bug reports and fixing them. Also, the whole Scratch design team is very actively and enthusiastically discussing all kinds of options and ideas in which direction Scratch could evolve. But please understand that we can't engage deeply in each and every discussion going on in the forums, as Scratch is a big project for a small group.
We're really spending much time trying to reproduce virtually every bug reported here and I try to give feedback on these things in the forums. We're also evaluating prototypes for a lot of ideas, both by the community and by ourselves. Some I posted publicly (like BYOB), some I hinted at in the forums (like using the official Source Code to play with networked Scratch sessions and multiplayer-projects). I might post some more experimental stuff on the Chirp website when they are ready. However, you need to be aware that these prototypes are just that - hands-on experiments which may never be included in the official version of Scratch.
One thing I can tell you is, that the next Scratch release will run on a much wider variety of hardware platforms and displays, which involves many subtle and some profound modifications of the user interface. In the meantime, all your bug reports, suggestions and troubleshootings are very welcome and needed to make Scratch better. So please continue posting and discussion them!
Thank you!

It's nice to hear that, Jens.
Then I must apologize for the (sad) post I posted above, as I wrote in it, it was not meant to be mean. The problem with "forums" is that topics might be read, but still may disappear from the first page because no one replies. This gives the feeling that there is no attention paid to those topics.

That sounds wonderful.
My imagination is going far... You knew there is a Squeak VM for the PocketPC? (Windows Mobile, previously called Windows CE)
