Learn it in college. At 12, I doubt you can learn C.

You can't learn it in a day or a week.

Re: its official

My (hypocritical) advice is to try Unity.

Unity Website wrote:

Unity 3 is a game development tool that has been designed to let you focus on creating amazing games.

It is a 3D game engine, that uses C#, Boo, or Javascript (if you know any of those, it would help).  It has been called the "most powerful 3d game engine this side of a million dollars", in fact, it is FREE.

Bear in mind this as you attempt this: 3D games are infinitely times more difficult to make than 2D games.  You have to make graphics in 3 dimensions, animation in 3 dimensions, and program in 3 dimensions.  But the human brain is so much more comfortable in 2D, and the 2 dimensional monitor is a poor tool for developing 3D models/games, but it is the only tool.  Prepare to put lots of effort into whatever you're going to make.

Oh, and I'm learning C at 16 right now  big_smile  (my cousin says it is high time for me to move on from JavaScript).  But one thing: once you learn one language, it will help you tremendously in learning others.  Many things are similar between languages, or at least the idea is the same.

no... thats one of the things i need help with

Are you willing to buy the SDK from Nintendo, take 6-12 months to learn the programming language, and hire outside experts to make the graphics and music? If so, it should be pretty easy.

If not, I strongly recommend not jumping to video game systems. Take some time to learn C or C++, and develop your own indie PC games. If they're really good and you can find ways to profit off them, well, it'll be a lot easier to save up for that SDK  wink

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Re: its official

Oh, sorry, didn't see the "ds/dsi" part.  Unity may not work for you in that regard.  There [i]is[/u] something called "Unity DS-1", but I'm not sure what the DS stands for, sorry.

Anyway, it was hypocritical because I don't use it myself - though hypocritical may have been the wrong word.  To be honest, I've kind of given up on 3d games, because it just isn't worth making all the animations and 3d graphics. (not that my graphics in 2D games are exactly stellar)  I still haven't figured animation out, just that it has something to do with animations in Blender.

Yes, I think it is. Nintendo doesn't want just anyone developing for their consoles, or they'd end up with a bunch of "tap the ball bouncing around the screen" games rather than ones they can actually market.

With taped eyelids MAYBE. Try 2 or 3 years.

Imnotbob, you should probably learn a language similar to what the ds uses, then in a while (turn 18 first) make an independent company sort of thing. You could send a sample game to Nintendo then buy the SDK. (whatever that is)

I'm being completely serious.

Edit: You could also e-mail nintendo now and if you're lucky they could give you the SDK now. (Use ponies)

Yes, but you can still learn it at twelve if you're devoted. I've learned a lot of C and C++, and I'm thirteen.
