Installed my new processor

I got a new processor for my pc (CPU) and it's a whopping beast of a thing, intel i7 2600k and I am very impressed with it, so much so that I'm posting it here.

Just to show how much better it is than my old cpu I devised a test.

I made http://www.youtuberepeat.com/watch?v=Z6wp-1YDz1w in blender (a 3d modeling program) it took 1 minute 15 seconds to render 1 frame of it with my old cpu, with my new one 20 seconds!

This is an amazing difference, and I just thought you'd like to know  smile

Re: Installed my new processor

Wow, a i7 2600k, the most powerful mainstream processor available! You are lucky, my laptop has a lowly (in modern terms) Core 2 Duo P8600.  sad

Re: Installed my new processor

Very nice! I upgraded my GPU and PowerSupply a few weeks. Diablo 550w supply and Nvidia Geforce GTX 465 (PNY XLR8 Edition) GPU, the unlockable version. If i ever upgrade anything else it would putting an i7 in it. They are so expensive though, where did youget yours?

The latest generation "Sandy Bridge" i7s are fairly cheap. A 2600K is easy to find for under $300.

Actually, the i7-980X is faster in some benchmarks such as PCMark and 3DMark Vantage, so it depends on what you go by. The 2600k seems to have the edge in more real-world benchmarks though.

But yeah, that makes my Phenom II x4 945 (which I just got maybe 6 months ago) seem downright puny. :$ Congrats!

Re: Installed my new processor

Looks quite fast. 4 3.4Ghz processors. (13.6) Turbo boosted to 3.8 (15.2). (8mb of cache) Released 2011
Much faster than my AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+. 2 2.7Ghz processors (5.4). (1mb total cache) Released 2007. This processor was at the medium speed back then.

2007        | 2011
5.4          | 15.2
Medium  ,| High

So Continuing the trend that processor you purchased will become standard in speed in about 5 years.

It doesn't seem so, I got mine for £237 ($389) and I haven't seen them cheaper.

Also, the previous generation i7 extreme 970 or whatever it is, is only marginally better, but costs about 3 times the price. I got mine from amazon.

Re: Installed my new processor

Wow. Fast. I got my laptop about 3 weeks ago, with a Intel i5 2.27 GHz Processor, and that's about 4 times faster than my old comp. I see that it is already outdated.  sad

Don't be sad. Everythings outdated before it's even finished testing phase.

Re: Installed my new processor

i7! Wow! But don't they have a slower clocking speed than the i5?  hmm

Anyway, I might get an iMac soon and that has a quad core i5... Not bad I think...

Wouldn't blender require a better graphics card than a faster processor?

This laptop I'm on is a Core 2 duo  hmm

The blender viewport uses OpenGL which is run by your Graphics card, but when it renders it uses your CPU because (I think) graphics cards are not stable enough and don't always give the same results.

Sorry to bump an oldtopic but misc moves waaay too fast :S
