seeing and doing, two different things my friend.

We're talking about the violence, not the gameplay. If a game is rated 16/18/whatever, than evidently it has violence in it. Or sexual content, or profanity, or drug use or whatever. It obviously has SOMETHING bad in it to make it a 16/18/whatever.

If you haven't played it, you don't know the CONTEXT of the violence, sexual content, profanity, drug use, etc. Maybe it's used to satire something. Sheesh. [insulting remark removed by moderator-please remember the Terms of Use]

Re: How to convince parents to let me get TF2?

I find it ridiculous when the media and parents blame video games on shootings and murders. If a man goes on a mass murdering spree, do you honestly think it was becuase he played video games? Or maybe becuase he was a freakin psychopath. If your average little johnny plays a M game, he's not going to start killing people. At times video games scare kids from violence becuase of how emotional and sad some of the story's are. If the parents honestly want something to blame for all the violence in the world, then blame religion not video games.

And some people in this thread just don't understand video games. Video games allow every kids dream to become a virtual reality. What boy hasn't imagined running from the cops with a cinematic explosion behind them? Who hasn't wanted to be in a zombie apocalypse mowing down zombies with a machine gun? If your one of those kids who think video games are bad for you, then your ruining your childhood. And once you hit the adult world world you will really wish you weren't so uptight and just had picked up that controller.

I'm also laughing at the people who say tf2 is violent. When you get killed by a rocket launcher you explode into a bunch of random polygons with red dots on them. It's not violent.

Re: How to convince parents to let me get TF2?

Up untill recent updates, TF2 supported a command code in the command console called "Sillygibs", which made all blood yellow and instead of losing bodypaarts from an explosion, the enemy/you will drop random items like car tyres and rubberducks. As I said, you can't anymore.

I sent a suggestion to VALVe, they haven't contacted back.

Re: How to convince parents to let me get TF2?

The while point is that we are more oversensitive now than around 30 years ago.
30 years ago it seems right to drop a dragon into lava back in super mario bros, but if it's something that looks 25% like a human that means it can get an M?

People just use games as an excuse for any horrific events. For example, the tragic events that happened in the coloumbine massacre. Just because one of the pupils played doom (A game, which by the way, isn't even that bad since your Defeating the monsters of the underworld, which makes it sorta like a religious shooter I suppose.) and made a mod which he called "Lifes work", people wanted Doom to be banned. And the mod? Looked nothing like coloumbine. So rather than looking at the mental issues that caused the events, they blame a GAME. Jack thompson is an idiot and even told a social networking site to remove any comments of him saying he is an idiot, which meant he proberbly knew he was being dumb.

Another game he tried to sue was THE SIMS 2. I'm not kidding. just because a mod could remove the censor blur. (Although this was for comedy effect as there are no rude bodyparts on the sims anyway.) You can kill your sims, and does that mean it's rated M? NO. Because the deaths aren't too graphic and the grim reaper just looks annoyed that a sim suffered a stupid death because you removed some ladders from a pool.

Let me finish with Fox news: They make stuff up.

I can't agree with you. I personally despise violence and I don't play violent video games, and I have no problem with that. Violent video games can be considered the Coliseum of modern society in that they allow people to experience the thrill of violence without actually engaging in it.

Two things that you should consider is that, first of all, some people need more violence than others, and second of all, video games are not the only option. If somebody doesn't like or doesn't play violent video games, it does not necessarily mean that they are missing out on something or trying to suppress their feelings. ^^

Well I'm talking to the people who refuse to play them becuase they think it's going to mess with there head and there going to turn into some kind of criminal. If you don't like violence/gore then that's something completely different.

So how can you say a violent video game is bad and is for sadistic people if you've never played it?

While I generally agree with sanddude for the time being, violence is generally bad for sadists.

If you're implying that I said that, then you're wrong. No where in any of my posts over these last two days (for me in England, at least) have I said that. I was saying that it's morally wrong (hence calling the people who play and enjoy those types of games ever so slightly sadistic (and immoral, but I didn't mention that because not many people care about morals anymore).

oh ok, I see where this is going.
I grant that some violence is the result of religion, but not all violence, and video games are certainly not blameless in violence.

Also, there is no specific religion to blame for the violence, but the diversity of religion.
so you are right, in part, I suppose  wink
