Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

I decided to start a separate topic for this debate. It was going on a lot in this thread.

What do you think and why?

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

I think it depends on what age you are. I play violent games, and I'm 16, and it hasn't made me more violent

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

Hmmm. Well I can say for myself no. It doesn't affect me consciously, and I'm pretty sure subconsciously either. It gives me an outlet to relieve anger and stress. And I think it's morally fine as I think i'm mature enough to know that it's not real, and I can tell right from wrong when illegal acts are present, and I'm smart enough not to copy them  cool

It won't if you're in the right mind.

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

Time to restate my opinion. I do not think video games induce violence. I think that what really happens is that some people who have these violent behaviors are attracted to these games. This is why it seems that video games cause violence at a glance, but at a closer look there is a hole in these arguments.

No, unless you don't have the common sense to realize video games are fiction. When parents say that it's because they don't want to blame the kid for not being able to control it's actions.

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

No.  My argument is:
Think of "Violent tendencies" as the top of a cliff that is safe to fall off but somehow impossible to climb.  Think of "violent video games" as the bottom.  Point A can lead to B, but B cannot lead to A.  At least in this case.  If you have violent tendencies, you are drawn to violent video games.  That's what politicians are pointing at.  The media only interviewed about AFTER the child started playing.  BUT, If you play violent video games, it is virtually impossible for you to gain violent tendencies when you had none before.
I'm 11, by the way, and even at this age i can tell the difference between "the real world" and "fiction".

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

I asked my mom this question.

She said that if you take a gun and shoot someone in a video game, the player wouldn't be as hesitant to do so in real life. And some other stuff I forgot.

I think violent video games, personally, are a good outlet for stress and violence otherwise used in the real world.

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

I play lots of violent games, and it doesn't make me a violent person (but I do joke about it alot  tongue )

Alot of the people in my History class are stupid. They're like:
"Hey mahn wazzup"
"Yo dude i playyed CoD yesterday nd i got like sevn headshotss!!!!!"
"No wayy!"
"Yeah dude it was epic"
My teacher:
"What are you two talking about?"
"Uuh just History"
My teacher:
"Mhm. And what does seven headshots have to do with the Great Depression?"
"Uh..."
My teacher:
"See me after class."
(whispering)"I wanna bloww hs hed of wit my mashine gunn"
"Yeah I wanna bom his hoouse"

Trust me. If they were writing down what they said, that's how they would spell it. I got partnered up with one of them and they just took a crayon and dotted a paper. I had to do all the work and they took the credit for it. When I asked them if they wanted to help they said no, and I bet if they did want to help, they would just tell me to give whoever I was writing about in my paper a machine gun.

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

Studies have shown that people who play violent video games tend to be less violent in the real life. It's kinda like a stress ball (unless you are playing CoD, which, in my opinion, causes more stress)

And discussing a video game that it's your and your parents choice to play is something the teacher can moderate?

Re: Does Playing Violent Video Games Create Violent Behavior?

In a word? Yes!

Its like when a soldier goes to a war and sees all the horrible stuff, and then comes back to civil life. They are de-sensitized and de-moralised. Some just go around killing people. Video games may not be THAT bad... but imagine all that violent stuff going into a little kid's head! I'm never playing violent games even if I'm grown up and all.  neutral
