Computer details:
OS: Windows XP SP2
Antivirus software: Avast 6.0 Free Edition, MalwareBytes Antimalware. (I also have AVG LinkScanner, but I'm not sure if that counts.)
Problem:
I was on the computer browsing the Internet, and for some reason the connection was lagging. Then a little balloon came out in my system tray and it said, "Your computer may be at risk- Norton Internet Worm Protection is turned off. Click here to fix." However, I never installed Norton on my computer before. I was thinking that this was some sort of rogue antivirus, but recently I did a scan with MalwareBytes and quarantined 6 files already.
Then, just because of curiosity I Google-searched this problem. A lot of people said that when they clicked it, Windows Security Center came up with false statements saying that there was no firewall or virus protection.
EDIT: I did another scan with MalwareBytes today and it detected one item, but it was just a virus that changed my homepage to a website with inappropriate content. Not a rogue.
Does anyone have this problem and/or know how to fix it?

Be careful! I had something similar once. It's likely a virus trying to sell you anti-virus software!

Its a virus made BY Norton to get you to buy Norton.

Do not do anything like that! Avoid wikias. They've been hit by a lot of worms lately.

How would Norton make a virus? OK, it seems like people are confused. A rogue AV is an fake antivirus software that is used to scam you. They can download to your computer secretly or via fake security announcements. This "Norton Internet worm protection" thing is actually fake and I'm pretty sure is NOT affiliated with Norton. It's just like the fake AVG or the fake Avira.

Open a bunch of tabs in your internet browser that try to sell you Norton. Also, after Norton expires, it's worse than a virus.

It's not a virus, it's a trojan. A virus is a malicious code that replicates onto your computer, while a trojan cannot replicate and may appear to be something good (you can say it tricks you). A trojan is like... hmm... a double agent.
I know enough about computers to understand this.

No... this "Norton Worm Protection" thing is a rogue, and all of the "threats" that rogues detect are mostly non-existent. I don't think I'm REALLY infected with worms- it's just a way they advertise. Then they'll ask you to pay for the "full version" of the rogue and then you instantly become a victim of credit card fraud.

Yeah. Get avast! antivirus protection. Also get rid of it with MalwareByte's.
