I don't think you can get on any servers (except mine) because you're always put in offline mode because your user hasn't bought Minecraft yet, which results in your name being Player. Unless you want to pirate and get a cracked Minecraft, or use your brother's account, it'll stay that way.

I got modloader to work, back up your saves and delete the whole .minecraft folder, it worked for me. On the modloader topic it appeared that some errors were caused by the HD texture patcher.

We got the iConomy plugin. Money can be earned by both killing monsters and mining...
Also, we got a shop plugin based on iConomy.
