Idea for how to prevent commercial spam, and remove the 60 second rule

So here is the idea. There will be a new status. Maybe something like "Really New Scratcher" or something like that. Now they would have a 180 second rule as well as a limit on how many posts they can have a day. So Really New Scratchers could have maybe 10 posts a day. But whenever they post, a mod has to approve the post. (I know it would strain the mods... But I'm just brainstorming). After 6 approved posts they get the New Scratcher status. (Extra security). And then it just goes like normal. So, what do you think? You could also remove the 60 sec rule then also.

Re: Idea for how to prevent commercial spam, and remove the 60 second rule

This seems a bit excessive to me. I honestly don't know how many spam posts there are a day and how the workload of checking every single post by people under this new status would compare with removing the spam that is posted, but the New Scratcher status seems to have been effective with dealing with that sort of thing. This proposed status would likely just make things more difficult on everyone.

Also, I don't see why it would change the circumstances regarding the 60-second rule, given that the New Scratcher status and related restrictions didn't.

Perhaps the Scratch team could give us an average estimate as to how much spam is found a day? It could help!

I agree; knowing how much spam is removed vs. how many posts would have to be approved daily would be helpful.

The thing I'm concerned about is that someone might have a harder time receiving help if a moderator isn't around. (You could also say, of course, that it's better than having spam that isn't removed because of a lack of moderators though.)

Can anyone think of any disadvantages to employing the system used on the Scratch site that does not allow you to post two similar messages in a given time span? Most of the spam posts I have seen have been the same post again and again, one in every thread.

Well, sometimes I tend to post similar messages to questions that get asked commonly, like suggestions for chat rooms or private messaging. My replies are usually somewhat different and also somewhat spaced apart since those suggestions only come maybe once every few days, but I could see it becoming a problem if those posts got blocked by the filter. It would depend on the length of time and how similar they had to be, I suppose.

On the main site I think it's only something like a couple of hours delay. maybe just over an hour, I've never tested it!

I seem to recall getting that message even though the last message I posted that was similar was a few days before, but I can't remember.  hmm

This does seem a bit excessive - and it's a lot if work for us moderators, who actually have plenty else to do! The current system seems to work quite nicely, too - the 60-second rule isn't just meant to prevent commercial spam, seeing as how it also keeps flames a teensy bit under control in case somebody 'loses it.'
