Yeah, there's a couple things I want to point out that I've noticed. Firstly, running to become a nominee is quite difficult since you have to get the Scratch Team's approval of quality, as well as tye Scratch Community's majority vote.
Typing that out, it makes me wonder - what voting system will the Scratch Team use? There's the common method of selecting your favorite and counting to see who is chosen the most, however we could also have the other version where we rank the candidates from most wanted to least wanted, which we can then work off of. Which will it be?I think it's going to be "vote for your favorite" since we aren't choosing multiple moderators this time around.
I can see what you mean, but other methods still have their advantages. For example, the Borda count involve the candidates getting points based on what rank you put them in, so it works as wikipedia says, "as a consensus-based electoral system, rather than a majoritarian one." So who knows.
I can see how that would lead to perhaps a more balanced result. We'll see what they decide on though.

England recently voted on a referendum to use the voting system Lucario describes above to vote in new political parties. It's an interesting system and the referendum was called by some of the parties that never get voted for. From studying this type of voting system before I voted, it seems that the system favours the underdog a lot more that the single vote system.
I wish the US would give that a try. Independents almost never get elected, even though they often have the best ideas and aren't tied down by party allegiances. Maybe that would finally give them a shot.

I wonder what time the Team announce the nominees... It should be sometime today!
I sure hope it's soon... the suspense is killing me!

It's 10:25 here in England, what time is it at MIT? I will fall asleep waiting at the keyboard soon!

It's 5:24 pm EST, which is MIT's time zone.

(we didn't change to that in the end)
Well of course. But the single vote system after being used multiple times (such as for political parties) usually ends up in only two parties, which is the flaw. Whereas here, everybody has to campaign equally fierce.

No actually. Pretty sure you can.
I'm pretty sure the American Pres does actually.

Wow, thank you Scratch Team. I'm honored that you would consider me a candidate for this election.
Also, I'd like to extend my congratulations to Harakou, sparks, and jji7skyline. You guys have done a great job as well.
And to everyone else, don't forget to come out and vote on Thursday, (preferrably for me ) and let's have a good, fun election. May the best candidate win!

Voting doesn't start until the 21st, so please don't post who you want to vote for...yet.
The 21st? That would be July 21st, 2011, 12:00 AM (0:00) EST, but nobody wakes up that early. :-P For me (since my timezones are different), it would be July 20th, 2011, 9:00 PM PST (21:00). I usually am awake by then, so yay!!! And I hope there are no IE users who can see this. xDDD

Congrats, candidates, and good luck in the coming election.
To answer a question that's been floating around, I do think we're using the same ranked voting system as last time...I've asked the ST about this so I'll be able to offer confirmation soon.
Offline
I wasn't around last election so could you please explain how the ranked system works?
Offline
You put the candidates in order of preference.

I've just looked it up and I understand now

This'll be hard for me. I don't know who I want.

Just want to point out that Harakou and Sparks prefer their names capitalized.

I don't mind my name being typed out as capital or lower-case. I registered with a lower-case 's' because a few years ago grammar wasn't what I was thinking about when I registered! I usually capitalise any Scratcher's user name when I type it in a sentence to fit proper noun grammar rules but either way works
I'm really looking forward to the vote on thursday now, and I have to say the other candidates all seem to me people who will do the position proud if they get it, the Scratch Team were right to choose them!

I thought nowadays you prefer it capitalized...
I also didn't care about grammar when I started: Look at old comments of mine to see that. XD
What does the term "do the position proud" mean? Is it the same as "do the position well"?

Sounds English.
