Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

No.

Because keeping things open and public  allow for things to be transparent. Inappropriate behavior is easily spotted and the benefits of having private communication do not outweigh its disadvantages.

There are other places on the web that do a better job at private communication.

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

First i thought it was good to have personal messaging, but after thinking about it, i thought it would be rude.

I agree with you

Dear Scratch Users,
I'm done with scratch, or at least making projects. I have made one last big game, thats both fun and teaches a lesson about water. It'd mean a lot if you gave me feedback.                              http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/bosox397/569201

Ok I'm not meaning to be rude or say anything bad about the scratch team but I have something in me I need to let out.

First you said
"Inappropriate behavior is easily spotted"
OMG my god this is so true! not really. I think that if you guys were jerks(Which you aren't) than that would be like saying to us this
"We think you are too dumb to be able to spot Inappropriate behavior, even when somebody puts it right in front of your nose. Also even if we didn't think you were that dumb you couldn't possibly know how to work a button that you click to send the details of the message and the User who send it directly to us for us to look over."
Now I know what you mean but really.. Can't you have all messages in a PM system blocked from over users EXCEPT for the scratch team? Also people could have a button they push called send to Scratch Team that sends the mail to the scratch Team's e-mail address that is just for that.

Second you said "The benefits of having private communication do not outweigh its disadvantages"
That is also not true. Also the disadvantages that I can think of is one(And this has to do with the first point): People might/will make multiple accounts just to dis somebody. Now yes that is a problem but what if you can "Ban" accounts with certain e-mails because you need a e-mail address to sign up(Also make a 2 accounts per e-mail rule)  I mean "ban" as in if they try to login they get a page saying that they cannot use that account until things are cleared up with the ST. If they do follow through and make multiple e-mails then the scratch team knows to look further in and see why the spamming happened.

Now for the happy side. The advantages to having a PM system:
(No order)
1. Sometimes people don't have e-mails. They used their parents' e-mail to sign up. They have no way of contacting anyone else on the scratch website other than posting publicly on the scratch website and forums which is fine unless they are creating a secret game with one other person then it could be bad to do it publicly.
2. Can't really think of anything else at the moment...

Well my energy is all used up so I gotta go

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

I disagree with you Buddy_ca111. What I think Andresmh was trying to say is that Scratch is meant to be a learning enviornment. Anything worth saying on Scratch is something that should be able to be viewed by the public, that way they can contribute. Private messaging is not neccesairily bad, although sometimes people use it for negative purposes. It's just that what would you say on there? Something Scratch related? If it is Scratch related, than it won't matter that it is viewed on the Site.

Private messaging can be used for what you like, but I don't think Scratch really has a need for something that can be done through other websites and/or e-mail.

you are over reacting
1)there is a contact us(the scratch team) link, just scroll down.
2) you can skip the email thing while signing up
3) your two accounts per e mail won't work cause you can make any number of email ids
4) I don't think many people need a "secret game" the entire point in scratch is remixing and sharing, if they want it that badly, le them create an e mail id and learn how to make one.
5) the fact that you can't come up with more is an arguement against your opinion
6) I am not out of energy  tongue

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

oh dear.... someone said about it being a learning environtment here (And if you check my spelling, i am still learning  big_smile ) What about the people who are on here just to have fun? I don't really go on here to learn about programming. I come here to have fun. Anyway on a more topicated note, (If there is such word) I am disappointed, but i suppose it is for "Learners" maybe i should go on newsgrounds and learn some actionscript instead  sad
Off topic even more: I won't do that. Don't worry  big_smile

The main point of Scratch like it says is to "Imagine-Program-Create"and If we put a private messaging feature it will ruin the point of Scratch which is to have fun programing.People will only come to Scratch to chat and Scratch will turn into something like Aim.I know I don't want that But do you guys want that?

I don't have a problem with Chatting and PMing in general, but that's not what this site was made for, was it?

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

Ok the topic says that  we WILL NOT HAVE PMING AT ALL. So far dawnlight and me and a few members have been explaining that why we shouldn't have pming and now it turned into a fight where we should have pming or not lets end this fight now and just agree with the topic

Re: Will the Scratch website have private messaging?

It's worthwhile to hear all points of view...as long as they are presented respectfully.  But so far I doubt any of the arguments for PM'ing have convinced the Scratch Team to change it's position.
