Discuss birds you see around your area. I'm curious to know what is common where you live, so can you say what state or province you are in? (I'm in east coast Canada BTW)

I became interest in birds years ago and let me tell you...FASCINATING! Everything about them (their beaks, plumage, feathers) never cease to amaze me. I went ahead and bought a few bird field guides and they've helped me a lot. I can now identify over 50 types of birds. I can even tell apart the genders of a House Sparrow based on their plumage. ^_^

BTW, you have a gift, like me, and don't let this gift fly away. Birds are very interesting and studying up on them early is a good thing. Before I wanted to be a paleontologist. Then I wanted to be an ornitologist, like you. Now I want to be an animator. Although I still like birds and dinosaurs, animation is my main goal right now. I do, however, enjoy watching birds whenever I get the chance, like at a park or just freelance driving.

UPDATE: Why does everyone keep messing around? It's a talent. You don't laugh at someone's talent. Would you like it if I started bad-mouthing Minecraft? Probably not, so what gives you the right to do so to Wiimaster? (Minecraft is just an example)

Birds are indeed fascinating. They are so diverse, I mean think about it. Being a 'Bird' is what makes owls, ducks, flamingos and penguins all very similar though they are completely different.
I am planning on getting a few bird guides in the future, I just don't know any good ones. Can you name a few titles you've read and have been helpful to you? I'd like to be able to get the knowledge to identify numerous species just by looking. (I'm really unspecific if I try now.) The only birds I can tell gender differences from are Mallard Ducks and chickens    (Those are easy though XD)

I have had other job thoughts (Art teacher or writer, to name a few) besides an Ornithologist. Even if I choose another job though, I will still make an effort to keep Ornithology a big part of my life. Bird watching, research, etc etc.

If you're gonna hate so much on them, you're gonna have a long bird-lover speech whether you like it or not. It's like someone murdering someone and telling the police not to lock him up in jail. That's just an example, don't take it too seriously.

Well, it all depends where you live, but I recommend Michael Vanner's work. I have two of his books (Field Guide to the Birds of North America and Encyclopedia to the Birds of North America). If you want something you can carry around in the field, I would choose the field guide because it's less bulky and is smaller. The encyclopedia is good for looking up birds while at home, but I have carried it outside with me at times.

Also, NatGeo has some pretty good stuff and don't forget Smithsonian. You can find these in your local bookstores really.
