Incorrect Password Messages

When there was the whole Kaj scare not that long ago, people were creating back-up accounts because they thought some one was trying to hack them. Why not have a system that sends you a message if anyone puts in an incorrect password?

The system would only give you five or six Incorrect Password Message at a time to prevent annoying the living daylights out of the user.  tongue  This way, if you see that some one is trying to get into your account, you would be able to make your password stronger if you feel that the hacker might have a chance at getting into your account.

Hmmm... Interseting idea, and I'm thinking that this should be an option, that you can change in your settings.

I really like this idea! I mean sometimes I mess up my own password, but it would be nice to know if someone is trying to guess your password. Support  smile

He/she is a banned user that most people refer to when talking about hackers.

I don't support. If someone fails at guessing your password it must already be strong enough. And all of those peeps that get loads of views would probably get a lot of these messages.

I'm not exactly sure if that's practical. Some people have a tendency to punch their password wrong a couple of times over (I'm one of them because my password is complicated.  tongue ).

I think it would be better if the system stopped letting you log in for a while after a couple of failed attempts (like 5 or 7 times), like they do with some other websites. Another option would allow you to keep tabs on what computer you use to log in - for example, Facebook has a function that asks you to label computer names when it detects a user logging in from a computer that he/she normally does not use, and then sends and e-mail; if log-in was legit, then the e-mail can be disregarded, but if the log-in is suspicious, then the user can use the links in the e-mail to alert Facebook of the break-in.

What if someone decides to 'spam' you with this feature? It would be so easy and annoying  hmm

Re: Incorrect Password Messages

I fear that this system you suggest would create a lot of unnecessary spam, as password guessers are out there. However, the community does a great job at keeping their accounts safe and nobody that I know of has been properly hacked in the whole Scratch era.

The current system works well enough, except that I would add a security question and a 'Last Logged in IP' feature. Maybe the lesson to learn here is to deal with problems yourself instead of relying on others to change the world. In Scratch terms,

Create stronger, hard-to-guess passwords.

And if the system stops you or a password guesser from logging in, then you could get a message. But only one. You think that would work better?

Thats the thing though, hackers don't give up on their first try and fail, it takes several hours, maybe even days until they give up.

It's happened to me a couple of times on Photobucket.  tongue

Locking yourself out doesn't prevent you from resetting your password, though. If someone manages to lock himself/herself out, the person can always reset the password through your standard e-mail reset link.  smile

Re: Incorrect Password Messages

Maybe it could be a combination of both... would it be possible to let user1 know that a different user was locked out of user1's account? That way, user1 can know someone was trying to get in but can't because he's been locked out.  smile  If you think that would be possible to impliment into Scratch, I'll add it to the post.  smile

But what if there was a button that said "Stop sending me messages when someone enters an incorrect password"?

Re: Incorrect Password Messages

Interesting, I support. This would be better, but I don’t think anyone could figure out my password, much less know/guess/figure out it’s association.
