At the bottom of the forum index page there's a list of users who have been active on the forums in the last few minutes, which in this case makes them considered as "online".

I think he's/she's referring to the actuall Scratch Website, not the forums.

There's not really any way (or need) to easily do that, considering you can stay logged in indefinitely.

What we're saying is that it would require some work to get a system that is effective, and there's no real reason you would need it, especially since there's one already existing on the forums.

The one that is on the forums is for people that are on the forums. People can be on the main site, but not the forums, so they wouldn't appear in that list.

IMO there would be waaaaaaaaay too many people tongue The forums can have a lot (to the point where it took up enough space that the Scratch Team considering removing it), but there are only 180k users here (and remember that lots of them are [commercial] spammers). Meanwhile, on the main site, there are 825k users out there...

This would be a great idea! Or maybe make it so that, if their online, make a green border around their avatar, and when their offline, make a red border around their avatar.
