I like the current friend system best.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I think you should do the friend & follow thing, instead of just friend list. This will help organize our current friend lists; for example, I have like 67 friends and its too hard to manage. Although, if you do do the friend & follow thing, however, will it remove everyone on our friend list, and we have to re-  friend/ follow them, or what?

That's a good question! If we were to move to a facebook style friends system, I think we'd do it by turning everyone's friends into people they follow. So, for a brief moment, there'd be no friends on Scratch!  lol

But of course then everyone could friend each other after that and get things sorted pretty quickly.

No, I like myself being my own friend.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I definitely think this idea should be implemented. There's plenty of people whose projects I like and would want to follow, but who I haven't interacted with enough to put on my friends list. Also, a Facebook-style friends list would cut down on those annoying messages that random people added you to their friends list.

If this were to be used, would you get messages if people would follow your projects?

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

Let's implement this!!! 8D

Hmm... I don't really know what else to say  hmm

Would the friends list still be public, and would the follow list be public too? I don't see any harm in it  tongue

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

Why don't we use both? There could be two lists called 'friends' and 'fans' (or something similar).

If someone adds you, they will be added to the 'fans' list and can follow you etc. and if you add them back they will move in to friends (there could also be a way of becoming their fan without being their friend). As friends, you may be able to to do more things like chat.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

What you talked about on the blog seems to me the most logical and obvious way of improving the friend system on Scratch. I completely support the original idea.

Change it. I was also confused like how it describes when I first joined Scratch.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

BOTH!!

There should be a friends system where the other end has to accept or deny the friend request, and there should be a follow system which would be like what Scratch is now, only called “follow” not “friend”. So instead of seeing “henley’s friends” you would see “henley’s followers” or “henley’s fans”, and for the real friends list, you should (instead of the message “[username] has added you to his/her friends list”) have a message saying “[username] wants to be friends. Accept, or deny?” Then the friend requester would receive a message saying, “[your username] accepted your friend request.” Or, “[your username denied your friend request.

So the be more clear, in following, there would be a system very similar to what we have now. In friending, there would be an option to accept and deny. The friends would also be considered “not friends” until the friend requestee decided to accept. Or denied, but they still wouldn’t be friends that way.

I think it's a good idea to switch too. and one more thing. you keep posting these topics, but it just makes everybody more anxious for Scratch 2.0

I am currently http://blocks.scratchr.org/API.php?user=GP1&action=onlineStatus&type=imagehttp://blocks.scratchr.org/API.php?user=GP1&action=onlineStatus&type=text and I finally got over 1000 posts.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

The current friend system seems better suited to following imo, especially considering the "My Friends' Latest Projects" section. I say friends are changed to following, and the new friends system be like henley proposed.

Perhaps have a way of checking whether certain galleries and projects can only be seen by everyone, only followers or only friends?

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I think the way it should be is this: a non-symmetrical friending shows up as "watching". A symmetrical friending shows up as being "friends". Example:

SCENARIO: Person 1 friends Persons 2 and 3. Person 2 returns the friending, and Person 3 doesn't.
OUTCOME 1 (current system): Person 1's page lists Persons 2 and 3 as friends, Person's 2 page lists Person 1 as a friend, and Person 3's page lists no friends.
OUTCOME 2 (my idea): Person 1's page lists Person 2 as a friend, and Person 3 as on his/her watchlist. Person 2's page lists Person 1 as a friend, and nobody on his/her watchlist. Person 3's page lists no friends or watched people.

There could also be a box for "People watching Person X", which would show what you'd expect.

It certainly would be possible - and I think likely. Seems like it would be a good / interesting thing to get a notification about.

Re: Scratch 2.0: Friend or Follow?

I like this a lot! This will help because a lot of people aren't my friend, just follow. And I like the verification as friend idea too. I'm someones friend and don't even know who it is.  tongue
