This thread is about the possibility of new features on the Scratch website that deal with communication with other users and thinking about what you've done when making a Scratch project (reflection).
There has been no decision on the Scratch team to implement any of the features yet. However, your feedback is greatly appreciated. It will be considered if and when the Scratch team weighs the pros and cons of different ways to address those issues.
These .html mockups are not meant to be functional nor is the visual look set in stone. Please comment on all the "new features" presented, what you'd do differently, or even your own new ideas related to this topic. Making a Scratch project will be even cooler!
Please, please, dont just say "I want to have chat". If you have any new suggestions, try to make something, in Scratch, photoshop, powerpoint, whatever your favorite tool, and submit it to provide constructive feedback. It doesn't have to be realistic, like these .html mockups. It can be quick sketches to communicate the idea of how the new interface would work and how a user would interact. Be specific about your ideas.
Thanks very much for your attention. Comment and suggest (and Scratch) away!

by the way, in case you're curious, jlai is an MIT student like me and he is generating these ideas as part of a class
Give him feedback!

I like the first little mockup the best since I would usually just divvy up the sections of the notes with text, but a good idea for the second one would be to let you make your own titles for sections instead of just FAQ and reflections n' stuff.
The first one is very appealing as well, but again, you should be able to type up your own.
It's a pleasure to have the first "response"
(Ha, I didn't say "LOL 1st pozt!")

Thanks for the comments boinoinoi! It's encouraging to see the first response from the community
Please feel free, at any point in the future (soon would be better ) to make your own mockup, whether through something like photoshop, which would look realistic, or even drawing boxes and layouts to show what you would want from either (a) profile page (b) project page or (c) any other aspect of the Scratch experience that deals with communicating to other members your knowledge about Scratch and what you are thinking about in Scratch.
Cheers!

I love the Friend Feed feature and the status update selection!
One suggestion, on the right nav bar of http://scratch.mit.edu/andresmh/mockups/project.html, there is a "Link to this project" module. When you move over the "+ bookmark drop down box", it gives you a selection of icons. I suggest instead of having the "+ bookmark drop down box", show all the little icons (i.e. email, facebook) right under "link to this project".

Is there some easier way to make mockup pages without learning html? (even though I have photoshop)

So if you want to make it clickable and go in and easily edit content and formatting, then probably it is useful to learn HTML/CSS (it's not bad. It might become useful for you later on )
If you just want a visual look, then photoshop, gimp, powerpoint, paint; depending on how realistic you want it to look, any of those programs would do. You need something that can slice and dice images and also create new images and text.
I would recommend starting with a pen and paper sketch. Basic thing you could do without using software is to then scan or take a picture of your sketch.
Does that help? If you can describe further how fine of detail you want, maybe others can help.

I would like to have a new tab added to the blue navbar called "Inbox", and let us send and receive messages to other Scratch members. For example, I could send a message to Andresmh, and he would get a message via the Notifications system, and he could click the Inbox button in the navbar and read it. Kind of like Facebook's message system.
Also, while only semi-related, I think we should get a notification when one of our projects is remixed.

I like your facebook-type Idea Jlai and also I think Jamie's idea about the inbox is also a good idea. I don't think the inbox would be that hard to html would it? Also having a message when your project is remix would be awesome even though I don't think anyone would be remixing my projects too soon

Hi Buddy_ca111 - for security reasons, we prefer that you don't give out your e-mail address. I've removed it from your sig. Thanks!

A way to see witch off your friends are online.example: say i look at a friends user name like on there profile or on my friends list and next to there name there would be text saying "Online" or "Offline" that way every one wouldn't have to guess and send messages to no one i hate to annoy my friends by leaving a bunch of comments on one or to projects.Oh and the new user homepage updates would be sweet!

Good luck HTML-ing a message system.
I assume that this site uses PHP?

So now my sig is useless without a messaging program. Thanks!

Also I think that people should be able to give them selves titles like for Jamie "Pong and Remixer" and etc.

Like if someone made a lot of good galleries they could have a title of "Master Gallery Maker" or like Archmage would be one of the "Best game makers". I would not have a title yet because I would need to earn it.
Also there is another way that could work for making a messaging program.
Just send an e-mail to a certain e-mail address with the user name of the person who you are messaging and your message in the message box and then the e-mail program automatically sends the message to the proper account(or e-mail address)!

It would be sufficiently hard to justify a "fair" title in that case, so what would probably be easier would be to have you give yourself your own title.
Other Stuff I thought about
==========================
---For the facebook-twitter thing, it would be nice to be able to type your own to give more freedom and give some maybe non-Scratch related news just so people know a smidge of what's up with you.
For example, I managed to get an entire drumset into my house, and then I could say so.
Nothing fancy, nothing fancy.
---Another suggestion I have heard of / thought of was polls. Just small polls on the little sidebar, where you only get one vote per account, and you get to choose the question and the answers.
Again, nothing fancy.
---Here I go again. A while ago, I found out about a google-based page called Blackle, whose sole purpose was for saving energy. I just thought as I was typing the last suggestion, wouldn't it be great to have something like that for Scratch?
For the third time now, nothing fancy.
And remember: My ideas are open to interpretation.

---I agree with Boinoinoi about the F-T thing. "How hard can it be?
--- Or how about a small space ot the sidebar that you can put anything you want into it then people can have more freedom then just polls(though polls would be easier to maintain)
---So for you thrid and last idea you thought of make an option to be an energy saver? Interesting. Why not also make a contest to see who can make the better theme and put the top 10 up to use(and the ES one too)

@boinoinoi, Buddy_ca111; thanks for your suggestions! for a while, i thought no one would use the forums
to help with the discussion, could you both talk about the *disadvantages* to any suggestion you are making? think of all the reasons why you would not want the feature. for instance, for private messaging, the first thing that comes to mind is much easier cyber-bullying. already with open communication, cyber-bullying has happened.
i think people generally understand *why* you want a certain feature, but it is also good to think about *why not*, or potential consequences.
it's impossible to predict what will happen once a new feature is put into place. it is hard to take a feature back once you put it out. think about all the people complaining after facebook did a UI change. of course, in the end, you cant please *everyone*. but at the very least, you should think about the pros and cons.
thanks again for your input
