Well, I had a real hard time of it before I checked out a beginner's guide. (I died out in the open with no weapons my first night, and my second night was spent hiding in a tiny, unlit hole in the sand.) You seem to be doing alright though if you've been playing 3 hours and aren't too concerned. You should consider checking out the wiki as it's a great reference for items, mobs, and crafting recipes.
Cool! I never knew there was a whole wiki on it. Thanks!

I watched a few videos on youtube before I bought minecraft, to see what it was like, so I learnt the basics from there.

If you need any other tips...
First, spend your first day gathering supplies, and find quick, easy shelter. If you really want to build a quick wooden house, thats fine, but it is not as safe as hiding in a spot where mobs can't get you, like a hole, or in the side of a wall of dirt or something.
If you are not armed, and a mob spots you, you have two decisions. One, attack with your bare hands, or two, run. If you are going to have a WWII style fist fight with anything, let it be a zombie. Skeletons are very hard to attack from up close, let alone with your fists, and creepers will just blow up before you can do any major damage.
If you are going to run, then don't run backwards. The last thing you need is to fall into something, get trapped, or burn while running from something that is already trying to make your fictitious demise a reality.
Cave exploring and dungeon hunting can be difficult! Such exploration can be fun and rewarding but it is extremely dangerous! Cave systems are very large, and mobs spawn in them in massive packs. They don't always come in large amounts, but they are still dangerous! They can also pop out if you don't light up every inch of the cave! Caves usually consist of hall type caves, or large rooms. These can all yield many types of dangerous mobs.
Dungeons are extremely rewarding, but dangerous and rare. Dungeons have mob spawners, which spawn a certain type of mob when within 16 blocks of it. The 24 block away rule does not apply with a spawner, so doing a dance on top of one is a terrible idea. When you find a dungeon, it will have the spawner, and a chest or 2. When you see one, which are easy to see, kill all the mobs in sight, and then quickly surround the spawner with torches, so that mobs cannot spawn. Loot the chests, and even take the chests and moss stone, since moss stone is rare. When you go into a dungeon, don't hesitate, get in there, light it up, take the stuff, AND GO!
I hope my abnormally long essay-like tips help~=!

I need some redstone help. I'm making a drawbridge, but for sake of time, I'm not including the opening system in this drawing, but just remember that redstone torch (V), when on, opens the drawbridge. I want it so that both lever (A) and (B) can open and close (V). Here's what I have currently, where one lever functions as more of a lock. - = redstone wire
Code:
A------------- D.BRIDGE - D.BRIDGE - D.BRIDGE - D.BRIDGE - V - - - B--------

Thanks! I already knew the first bit, but the stuff about mobs was really helpful.

I made this: mob spawning room (the torch isn't usually there) but mobs won't spawn. Why?

Mobs can only spawn 24 blocks or further from you (with the exception of monster spawners) so maybe you're hanging around too close for them to be able to?

Hm... I can't remember what mobs are more likely to spawn on, but cobblestone should work. Have you tried other blocks like regular stone or dirt?

Nope. Is it too thin?

It's not an internet game per se. It's essentially an actual PC game that you don't have a physical disc for.

I hate how people say that just because you have a dream of something

I don't think that matters. According to the wiki, monsters can spawn on an "fully opaque block" with a light level less than 7. So I guess cobblestone should be fine. I can't honestly see what could be wrong, other than maybe just not giving it enough time. I think mobs are most likely to spawn at dawn and dusk, because I noticed the later I go to bed the more mobs there are outside in the morning.

Hmm...
*Sigh* I hope I didn't waste those 8 stacks of cobble.

Well, a dream is usually related to what you've been doing in the day, so that probablt means you were playing minecraft a lot in the day.

I play minecraft in the day, and do other things too.

Dreams are more complicated than that. I had a dream about Just Cause 2 just last night even though I haven't played it in weeks.

Waste? To be honest, I've been trying to think of things to use all mine for just to get rid of it all. I've got an entire double chest full of the stuff.
