48÷2(9+3) = ?

There are two possible answers: 2 and 288

48
—*(9+3)=288
2

or

   4
———— = 2
2*(9+3)

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

According to Wolfram Alpha, the answer is 288. If you got 2, I'm pretty sure you're doing you're math wrong.

Wolframalpha also said...

Input: 48÷2(9+3)=2

Result: False

So 48÷2(9+3) does not equal 2.

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

You're supposed multiply, then divide :P.

Edit: Nevermind, it's divide then multiply.

Wouldn't it be 288, according to the Order of Operations?

Nonononono, it's a meme. I'm not doing homework. ;-)

While technically you are right, someone could argue that the problem has implied multiplication.

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

48/2(3+9)
Step One: Do work in Grouping Symbols
48/2*12
Step Two: Use all exponents
No Change
Step Three: Do all Multiplication, and Division, Left to Right
24*12
=288

Your music tastes are bad, therefore your argument is irrelevant.

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

According to PEMDAS/BEDMAS:
48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
24(12)
288
The mistake would be:
48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
48/24
2

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

If you strictly follow the order of operations, the answer is 288. The problem is that it's deliberately written ambiguously to stir up debate. An easy way to solve this is to rewrite it a bit like this:

48 ÷ 2 * (9 + 3)

When written this way, it's much more clear. Because multiplication and division have the same priority, you just go left to right.

48 ÷ 2 * (9 + 3)
48 ÷ 2 * 12
24 *12
288

Multiplication and division are on the same level B/I/MD/AS
So the answer should be 288...  tongue

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

What is BIMDAS?
Or at least the 'I'?

Their exponents, not ixponents.

But anyways, you do multiplication and division from left to right.

Re: 48÷2(9+3) = ?

Why do I keep getting 144?  hmm
(I learned PEMDAS:
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication/Division
Addition/Subraction)

(9+3)=12
    x(48/2)[12]
   12
  x12
144

Maybe because 48/2 doesn't equal 12?  tongue
