maybe a top down shooter, 4 way scrolling platformer or a simulation of some sort

Maybe you should do some kind of game with a small storyline to it? FX: luna-budew's Cherubi Land. Storyline: Find Wish the Jirachi to get the key to Diamond Temple. There Celebi will show you what the town will look like/looked like.
