I feel sorry for you but that happens all the time to me. I have discovered several ways to crash Scratch.
#1 importing a non-supported or corupted sound file
#2 making a realy huge project
#3 having too many scratch windows open at once.
these are ways to avoid crashing Scratch
#1 always save your project every 1-5 minutes of work to prevent a huge loss
#2 close any non-used Scratch windows.
#3 open up another scratch window and see if an image or a sound causes a crash. that way you know what the problem is before you ruin your project.
#4 monitor your computer's physical memory usage
by pressing ctrl+alt+delete to sart a task manager,
then click the performance tab.
if the green bars in the bottom window are full, save your Scratch projects and restart your computer

Could you give a few more details about the crash? Did any of these happen:
It froze
The text disappeared
A white box appeared at the bottom, text flashed across it, then Scratch closed
A dialog box popped up saying 'Sorry the VM has crashed'
A red box popped up with code in it, or the message 'Space is low'
When you moused over/clicked something its graphics vanished and it ended up white
