Allowing political topics is going to far, as it would just end up in an argumentative mess if some of the less mature people were allowed to debate politics.
No, it's not. You can't shield kids from this.

You can't shield kids from knowing the government's a gaggle of idiots? I think you can, they would learn later anyway.

You can't shield them, but it's not something to talk about on a children's website.
End of story.

Does your political opinion shake up your mind that much that it can't resist from being expressed in a mere kids' programming language forum? More importantly, are you sure that your opinion is worthy of mentioning? Because I honestly hope you do not poison this unbiased community with one-sided arguments, and especially wrong ones. Are you confident of your political knowledge? Do you imply that you're politically wise just because you can identify that "China is communist" (a statement which is not 100% true anyway)? If you do, what do you seek in discussing this? Whether China is/isn't communist? Stiff discussion you've got there. Please, do not act that you can discuss politics if you cannot, because someone might mistake opinions for facts, and you will harm both yourself and your community.

Can this actually bring back political threads? I don't want to waste my time arguing if it'll be fruitless anyways.

No, don't allow them. The main reason is that it results in flame fights. Plus, politics is a very serious subject and it's VERY sophisticated, so younger Scratch users wouldn't understand.

im sorta for it
there r just some political things we cant handle
they need a politics forum (wow...) or something so misc isnt cluttered w/ politics like bin laden or china

I don't think we should have a separate board on here. Maybe an external one, but definitely not one on the Scratch forums.

Good point. So, yes AND no then?

I say NO for Scratch. YES for an external forums.

That is an example of superficially discussing politics
("like Bin Laden or China")
I'm not saying that you are a younger user of Scratch, imnotbob. Even adults seem to superficially discuss politics, religion, and various other types of news. Then kids (even me!) do it even more.

China is socialist actually
but why do people care? Why can't they stop arguing about this and that? I still say no to political topics. Enough said.

We can't handle it.
We couldn't handle the comics issue way back in the summer (The comics which I have now read). How are we to handle this?
We can't.

How about a trial? For the weekend, we allow politics on the forum. We stop it on Monday and take time to review how the community did. If it looks like they did well, maybe we can allow politics as long as it doesn't get too extreme.

Really. I honestly don't think we can handle it, but this might just prove my point.
Or disprove it. Though really, a group of 10-15 year olds discussing major political issues?
Right.

Right.
You joined the forum after the Inspiration and More forum broke up in January of 2010 right? There wasn't a whole lot of political topics back then, but there was a major religion thread. It's not that the Scratch Forums couldn't handle political topics before, it's that the Scratch Team grouped Political Topics along with Religious topics when cleaning the forum of them because the one big religion topic by Mayhem sparked a medium sized flamewar even though it went at least 60 pages without a fight.

No. Join a political forum. Scratch is geared toward younger kids anyway, so a seroius political discussion might go like this:
(Using previous example)"China is communist"
"lol no they're not
"
"whats a communist"
"communists is bad ppl"
etc.

We can't handle it. Some people are flamers and will completely FLAME these topics, more than other topics. Political topics here are flamebait and there's a reason they are banned. I do not support this.

How do you know we can't handle it? Don't you trust your fellow scratchers?

Yes, but not with political topics. I'm sure that the topics would lead to massive amounts of trolling and flaming. At one point, people would forget that it was originally a political topic and think it was made for flaming.
