Re: ALLOW Political threads! A petition

Well, I think it shouldn't be too bad if we make sure people only say, for example 'This is my political opinion..." instead of "ZOMG IF YOU THINK THIS YOU ARE STUPID". And talking about flame wars, it would be the same as normal topics, if it started to flame, close it.

Re: ALLOW Political threads! A petition

I'd love to discuss politics. I'm very passionate about my political beliefs. But this is a kids website, so no... Maybe we should create our own political forum outside Scratch?

Re: ALLOW Political threads! A petition

A political debate is bound for problems.  Most of the users are below the age of 14, and can be very imature.  Flame-wars are mostly started on political/religious posts, and this is why the Scratch admins have denied this sort of discussion to go about.  Furthermore, the political debates would just spam miscellanious.  If you would like to have a political debate, your more than welcome to find a forum that lets you!

This thread should be closed. Discussing politics in any way is bound for trouble.

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

I can say stuff like that with no punishment in america.

What if you say it in front of him?

I'd hate to say this even though I am on the no side but Freedom of Speech lets us do this thing. The Constitution says we can express our feeling about the government and the President without punishment. Just to clarify. Close this before a flame starts.

Re: ALLOW Political threads! A petition

Long answer: This is a kids' website, you seriously think most people in here can handle the arguments likely to be caused by threads about politics? Most, if not all of them end up in a mess of arguments. There sure are lots of other places created specifically to discuss this, if you're interested.

Short answer: http://www.politicsforum.org/

Re: ALLOW Political threads! A petition

I would support this if this site was made of just older kids/teens, but there are young users who don't know how to debate respectfully and casually.

Now, maybe we could create a separate forum where kids and teens debate, but Joj2 might have beat us to it.

As for the free speech argument? You're right - the first amendment of the Constitution gives us the right to freedom of expression, but the Scratch forums are a private message board and as such, the Scratch Team has the right to moderate them and set rules for them. Even hate speech is protected under the first amendment, but you don't see anyone complaining about that being censored on the forums, do you? Also remember that although this site is based in America and many of its users are American, it's an international site and not all countries have the same rules.

Exactly.

It's a kids site. This isn't a site made for teens only. No. This is a site that was made for children AND teens. If it was a teen site, then you'd be correct, but this site is for children of all ages.

What is inherently harmful about the discussion of politics or religion? You cannot shelter children in such a manner.

Of course. Why don't we turn off the language filter too, so we can teach the children how to curse?

Allowing political topics is going to far, as it would just end up in an argumentative mess if some of the less mature people were allowed to debate politics.
